Fire at CBT – not much damage caused

7:53 AM Posted by ukmad

As reported by CJ Prostil-

A fire broke out at the main switchboard at the Central bus stand yesterday mid night.  The worst part there was no fire extinguishers or other fire fighting equipment at such a crowded place. The locals there brought the fire under control and even after 20 minutes or so the Fire brigade had not responded. There is the Market police station just opposite the Bus stand but there were no fire extinguishers there or they might not be working. Not much damage was done to property or life but fire fighting equipment is a necessity in such highly crowded areas.

The authorities should look into this seriously and make arrangements for fire fighting equipment and with the same regular maintenance of the same should be under taken.

Belgaum techies come aboard and meet – AllAboutBelgaum IMPACT

12:29 PM Posted by ukmad

Belgaum Techies working in the IT and ITeS fields have concurred the same thought as of this blog and in response to Collective effort to develop IT & ITeS in Belgaum, they had their first meeting on Saturday 23rd May at Ajanta Café which went on in a informal but very assertive manner.

R K Patil of Vayavyalabs, Swapneel Patnekar from eTH1 Network Solutions, Aadil Bandukwala of Leading Minds, Ameet Patil of Spundhan, Harshad Joglekar a freelancer, Sandeep Tekriwal of Starnet computers, Sandeep Hegde & Manoj from DotCord, Vinod Chavan & Vishal Kulkarni from 3iGlobal were present for the first meet.

A formal round of introduction happened and all shared the idea of collaborating. They all thanked AllAboutBelgaum for talking this initiative and getting the It & ITeS related people closer in a group. Each one expressed their own problems and success stories and agreed to collaborate with each other. An e-Group has already been created for this and in some time a website will also be primed with all the details of the companies, Jobs etc.

A need was felt by all that as a group they should approach colleges and companies and promote themselves as well as Belgaum as a Brand. Reaching out to the clientele is the biggest challenge many said and this kind of a platform will enable and aid all of them to achieve their goals. As all are startups a need was felt to share the ideas and also share professional knowledge with each other on various topics which will include taxation, company formation and govt legalities.

AAB will continue to play its role in this and will try and bring forth talent as well as jobs openings in these companies for the benefit of Belgaum.

This is just a beginning and monthly meets will follow and the base of companies will also be added to the group so that all the It & ITeS companies based in Belgaum will come under a single banner for the benefit of Belgaum.

Marriages are made in heaven-registration at office

All muddled over Microsoft- VTU MoU

5:15 PM Posted by ukmad

The Centre for Internet and Society filed an RTI application to Visvesvaraya Technological University asking it to provide details about its curriculum design, and its tie-ups with various software vendors. (The Microsoft DreamSparkProgram is an initiative by Microsoft where all the students of the VTU would be allowed to download free versions of Microsoft original software and portraying an act of benignity from Microsoft for the student community. Microsoft through this program (with the real intention of suppressing any development of intellectual self reliance of the students), was able to make a deal with the VTU.)

The grip software vendors have over courses in technology (at both the school and the university levels) is a matter for concern. Due to what can be termed institutional inertia, educational institutions often don't realise that alternatives exist in the form of FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source software), as proprietary software is entrenched in the system (and is sometimes the market leader in that tech sector). To further tighten their grip, software vendors enter into commercial deals with governments and universities in attempts to penetrate the crucial education sector. This often results in students being taught courses on how to use particular (usually proprietary) software instead of being taught standard technologies. In turn, this denies them the opportunity to learn the concepts behind the software effectively, and ties them to the particular software that they were taught. For software vendors, getting their products into the curricula is very important because the supply of students trained in particular software also affects the demand for that software.

Against this backdrop, The Hindu on Nov. 19, 2008 and the Deccan Herald on Nov 20, 2008 carried articles which talk about MoU being signed between Microsoft and VTU. A Right to Information application to get more details about it and t seems that the answer they got for it was pretty ridiculous one.
VTU’s reply to the RTI stated -
“With reference to the above, this is to inform that the matter MoU between Microsoft Corporation and Visvesvaraya Technological University is in discussion level.  No document is signed till date.”

But things get even more interesting when it was found that there was a Microsoft Press Release. For your reference here is the link to Google Cache which shows the MS Press Release in HTML format with relevant text highlighted.

So clearly there is something messy in there, says The Centre for Internet and Society. Someone of the two is not correct. As the VTU has officially replied its now turn of MS to clarify. Why its technologies were are given preference over several FOSS technologies (which are often better) and also disregarding competitors who rule the market.

Belgaum Young Guns - Dr. Ameet Patil - Spundhan Softwares

10:46 AM Posted by ukmad

Dr. Ameet Patil is a server in himself storing a lot of talent on a real time basis. He was into software development from his engineering days and designed some software’s for his family and friends. A very good cricketer with various awards to his credit during his college days, also won “Gold Medal” and “State Award” in All India Painting Competition for two consecutive years, keen interest in traveling and photography add to his passion. A topper from in engineering, he was also awarded the Best boy of the year. He studied at Sandur Residential School as his father was Maintenance manager in the Sandur Manganese and Iron Ore (SMIORE) Company in Sandur. Later he studied at St. Mary's High School and did his engineering from KLE engineering college.

Dr. Ameet has been awarded a PhD. in Computer Science from the University of York, UK. In his thesis, he proposed a reflection-based RTOS framework that allowed runtime adaptation of the OS resource management policies to support varying application-specific requirements.
The reflective framework was implemented and evaluated in a custom built RTOS as well as in the Linux OS (2.6.16 kernel).

Few researchers working along with Ameet in York's Real-Time Systems group started a company in 2006 and in 2007 appointed Dr. Ameet as a Software Engineer. Ever since his college days, Ameet always wanted to do something of his own someday. He wanted to return to his home town Belgaum. Looking at his competence, many-a-times his friends suggested that he start a company. Since then he was on the lookout for the right occasion or the right project to kick off. After a full year of working in York, he realized the best way to start a venture in Belgaum was to permanently move to Belgaum and then fight it out himself, otherwise he would never be able to do it.
Early in 2008, he set himself a deadline to return to India by the end of 2008. With the help of his parents, he registered Spundhan as a company in March 2008. During the last few months of his stay at York, UK, he made a proposal to provide consultancy services to his employer from India. By leveraging over cost and quality, he convinced them and bagged the contract. He moved back to Belgaum, India on 31-Dec-2008 and started working fulltime from 01-Jan-2009. Now Ameet is busy looking for new projects, planning on the growing the company, etc. have been instrumental in shaping my career and a greater reason for my return to Belgaum.

Dr. Ameet is currently promoting Spundhan as a Services company in the area of real-time embedded systems. Spundhan is a leading provider of software development, training and consultancy services. To name a few, they specialize in embedded systems, RTOS, device drivers, software timing analysis and much more. Having said that, Spundhan does not restricted itself to real-time systems alone. It can ready provide services in other areas such as web applications, enterprise application, linux-based systems, etc. Spundhan is also keen on providing training services to the young Indian market.

Dr. Ameet also has various publications to his name, “Efficient Page lock/release mechanism in OS for out-of-core Embedded Applications”, in Proceedings of the 13th IEEE Real-time and Embedded Computing Systems and Applications Symposium (RTCSA), Daegu, S. Korea, Aug. 2007 , “Towards a File System Interface for Mobile Resources in Networked Embedded Systems”, “Implementing Application-Specific RTOS Policies using Reflection”, “The Styx IP-Core for Ubiquitous Network Device Interoperability”, “Operating Systems and Supporting Architectures for Embedded Real-Time Systems”, “PROTON: a customizable on-the-fly Virtual Memory Simulator” are just a few of them.

Some excerpts of interview with Dr.Ameet Patil-

1. How will you explain to a lame person what do you do exactly?
AmeetĂ  Spundhan aims to touch every Indian's heart with what it does. We aim to develop and market software products in any domain: mobile, banking, PC, aircrafts, automobiles, etc. Currently, make develop specialized embedded software applicable to aircrafts, military applications, automobiles and telecommunications.

2. You worked in UK from 2004 to 2008 what was your over experience there with people from other nations?
AmeetĂ  I love to work with different kinds of people and have been very lucky in this aspect while in the UK. My colleague were from all parts of the world including US, China, Japan, Spain, Italy, France, and many more. During my PhD. I have supervised undergraduate students from different regions. It’s amazing how different people are? How you interact with a particular person depends on which part of the world he/she is from. The difference in culture, religion and language in general makes it even more exciting.
I have a chance to travel to a lot of different countries to attend/present at international conferences. Some of these countries include: USA, Mexico, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, S. Korea, etc.

3. You always wanted to come back to India but why Belgaum?
AmeetĂ  I am a Belgaum product. There’s something about Belgaum that I can't let go. Most of my relatives and friends are in Belgaum and also, the weather in Belgaum has been very good for me.
Apart from my attachment to Belgaum, today's globalization allows one to work from any place in this world. The location does not matter anymore. Why go to crowded Bangalore or any other city when I have my very own Belgaum?

4. You started this startup in 2008, what made you start this? What was the motivation behind it?
AmeetĂ  I am sure all will agree: “Every one of us at one point dreamt in our lives to do something of our own.” I was no different. The only difference probably is that I took it too seriously and followed my dreams. Developing computer software comes natural to me. I get excited to work on new things, learn new languages, new technologies. What best way to do this other than starting a company of your own? That way it is you who decides what you want to do... I love that freedom!

5. Weren’t you afraid, what if the company fails?
AmeetĂ  It is too early for me to say that the company is a success. Never-the-less I am not afraid even if it fails. One thing I definitely will take back from it is that: “I at least followed my dreams. I tried”. I have no regrets. I thank God for giving me this chance.

6. How did you fund it? All with internal accruals or personal savings?
AmeetĂ  All my personal savings.

7. How and what was the reaction of your parents and friends when you told them about this startup?
AmeetĂ  Most Indians think going abroad means a big achievement and there is a much better life there than in India. Some even hate being in India for its bureaucratic systems and the lethargy involved.
So, the initial panic was quite justified. They were dead against me leaving a well paying job in England. The idea of returning to India, moreover to Belgaum, poked them in the eye. They were baffled and shocked by my move. Not any more though. They now believe I made the right decision.

8. Why this name Spundhan?
AmeetĂ  Spundhan is a sanskrit word, it means rhythmic heart beat. Something that never stops, keeps on going... It was actually coined by one of my school friends: Raghavendra Kulkarni, who once wanted to join hands with me.
9. How much turnover do you expect to achieve in this current year and what are your estimates for the next two years, any targets? (Approx)
AmeetĂ  It’s a speculation really. Given the hard work I put in, I am expecting a turnover of 10 to 12 lakhs this year and hopefully double it every year.
10. Does foreign exchange have any impact on your business?
AmeetĂ  Currently, yes. Our client is based in the UK and they pay in UK pounds. The fluctuations in the rupee value definitely affect but do not make a huge dent in revenues.
11. Globally who are your clients Indian or Global?
AmeetĂ  Both actually.
12. In this time of global recession is there any slowdown in your business, or do you see it coming a bit later?
AmeetĂ  Spundhan offers very niche services. So far we are not affected by recession. However, we cannot rule it out and are careful in planning for the future.

13. Your thoughts on collective development of IT & ITEs in bgm.
AmeetĂ  Unlike Bangalore where there is cut-throat competition, Belgaum is still in a budding stage. We need to plot Belgaum on the global IT map. It needs help. One person or one company is not good enough, we need to collaborate and collectively develop Belgaum IT. Let’s share our knowledge and grow together.

14. What is that you like the Most of Belgaum?
AmeetĂ  For me Belgaum weather comes as first. For business, it’s the location advantage which makes it closer to all major IT hubs in India (Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad).

15. What do you like the most to do when you are not working?
AmeetĂ  Play with my Dog: Bruno, socialize with friends and family, travel to new places or read books.

16. Tell us something about your family?
AmeetĂ  I live with my parents and my wife Sushma who happens to be my childhood friend as well.

17. Your favorite quote, if any?
AmeetĂ  I am a firm believer of this: “Where there’s a will, there’s a way”

18. Your thoughts on people thinking of coming back to Belgaum and starting up a new venture.
AmeetĂ  This is the best time to do it Do it now or you will never do it. Belgaum and India in general has great potential. There are so many things one can do here. Come back and you will never regret it.
19. Lastly what do you think about this blog?
AmeetĂ  Amazing work. Belgaum and all Belgaumites salute you. Keep up the great work.

Belgaum traffic nuisance - Rastrotthan sankalp investigates

11:24 AM Posted by ukmad

Associates of RASTROTTHAN SANKALP Mr. Gangadhar Patil and Mr. Chetan G conducted a survey on 9th May 2009 in Belgaum. They took snaps of almost every case of violation.

Here is their report and the photos of traffic violations done by Belgaumites.

People are often seen complaining about the increasing traffic and blaming the traffic police for the mayhem. But has anybody strictly followed the traffic rules till date. Ask one, the reply is a straight no.

The traffic system in the Belgaum City is in a pathetic condition. People of Belgaum are mostly unaware of the traffic rules. Traffic sense does not prevail in the minds of any one be it residents or concerned enforcing authorities. Innumerable cases of violations can be found almost at every nook and corner of the city. Travelling on the main roads is not at all a safe option. Traffic rules are being completely neglected and violated in many ways. Rastrotthan sankalp took an initiative to look into this aspect in detail.

Riders could be seen coming on the wrong side, overtaking from the left , crossing the guarded railway gate when train is about to arrive, escaping the traffic signal, exceeding the speed limit, etc. Even worse, youngsters are often seen with their acrobatics on bike, sometimes they drink and drive cars and bikes. College Going students often drive bikes in a Zigzag manner. They compete on the roads as well as highways ending up in accidents. Trucks all over the city creating huge traffic. Unfortunately Belgaum is not properly connected by Ring Roads meant for the trucks. Trucks can be seen entering restricted areas, parked anywhere inside the city most of the times exceeding speed limit. In these circumstances, the traffic gets worse and accidents are bound to happen.

Following are the violations we could capture in the Belgaum city limits.

Traffic Rules

  • Keep on your left, allowing the vehicles from the opposite direction to pass.
  • Give way to traffic on your right, especially at road junctions and round about.
  • While turning either left or right, give way to vehicles going straight.
  • While turning left, keep to the left side and turn close to the left side of the road to which you enter.
  • Slow down at the junctions, intersections and pedestrian crossings. Also slow down near school zones, temple areas etc., where a lot of pedestrians and vehicle traffic move. Give signals before you make any maneuver, indicating your intention, so that the other road users can adjust accordingly.
  • Always use a helmet if on a two-wheeler and always check that the strap is fixed properly.
  • Stick to the given speed limit and remember that speed limit is related to the traffic condition.
  • Keep enough distance from the vehicle ahead to avoid collision.
  • Yellow lines should not be crossed under any condition.
  • At junctions or intersections, never park the vehicle beyond the stop line.
  • At pedestrian crossings always remember that the pedestrian has the right of way.
  • At the signal, do not stop your vehicle on the Pedestrian Crossing.
  • Two-wheelers are meant only for two. Third person is not allowed, even children.
  • Do not start your vehicle on the amber light. Wait for the light to turn green.
  • Overtake only from the right side of a vehicle. Never overtake on bridges, narrow roads, junctions, school zones and pedestrian crossings.
  • Do not drive in a zigzag manner.

Making Belgaum a model district is Angadi’s prime intent

10:28 AM Posted by ukmad

In an interview to TOI, newly elected MP Suresh Angadi said that his prime intent was to develop Belgaum District as a model district.

He also said, he is keen on developing basic infrastructure that is needed to declare Belgaum officially as a second capital by government. He plans to complete the ongoing irrigation projects and set up new industries.

Do you know what this is in Belgaum? RTO Kanbargi

Do you know what this is in Belgaum?

See those zig zag roads, to me it looks like a race track, Do you know what this is?

This was toughest one I had posted I guess.
This is the NEW TEST TRACK on which you will have to drive to get your Driving Licence .
This is being made at the new RTO office at Kanbargi Road (Ramteerth Nagar) it is opposite the Horticultural university at Kanbargi.

Angadi got highest votes in Arbhavi & lowest in Belgaum North

10:35 AM Posted by ukmad

Suresh Angadi got emotional and said "People of my segment voted for me whole-heartedly. I gave around one lakh recommendation letters to people from my office. I don't know whether letters given by me benefited them or not, but they played a major role in this victory. I had become mentally sick and lost confidence because of all controversies. But my people didn't let me lose'' - Quoted from TOI

Suresh Angadi is on overall fourth position in terms of margin of Votes in Karnataka and on 3rd position in the BJP candidates. Devegouda is on No.1 position with a margin of 291113, followed by Pralhad Joshi of Dharwad 137663, J Swamy, HD Kumarswamy 130275 & Suresh Angadi won by 118687 votes.

Angadi secured highest votes from Arbhavi assembly constituency and lowest from Belgaum north. No doubt Angadi was able to secure his victory by a higher margin than 2004 but the number of votes casted in his favour came down from 2004. Angadi got votes from all assembly constituencies rural and urban both. But Belgaum north got him the least votes but still he managed to get more votes in that particular assembly constituency than his Congress candidate.
