Hooli a village of temples

Hooli has so many temples; every temple has its own well. Even at remotest location on the hills has couple of temples.
Hooli is about 9 kms from Saundatti.
One of the oldest village in the Belgaum District, it is famous for Panchaligeswara temple. Some of the other ruined temples waiting for conservation and restoration. On the outskirts of Hooli is the Trikuteshwara Temple.

Architecture of the Hooli Panchalingeshwar Temple is to be adored. It is a protected monument comes under Archeological Survey of India. Earlier people during summer afternoon they used to resting in the shade of this temple. Because the temple is made of stone, it is unbelievably cool even in the scorching summer.
Other than Panchalingeshwara Temple, Hooli has many other old temples; most of them are now in ruins due to negligence. One is amazed by the sculptures and carvings on stone. Most of the temples have their floor dug up for the hunt for treasure.
Other temples at Hooli are Andhakeshwara Temple, Bhavnisankara Temple, Kalmeshwara Temple, Kashi Vishwanatha Temple, Madaneshwara Temple, Suryanarayan Temple, Tarkeshwara Temple, Hooli sangameshwar ajjanavaru, Beerdevar temple Hooli.
Shivakashi Valley seems to be a place which was once densely covered by trees. At this location you can find the marks left by monsoon springs and waterfalls. Based on stories heard from village elders there used to be tigers once upon a time. Stories were told where some village folks hunted them off decades ago. The location otherwise is dotted with few temples and well. Tigers may have disappeared, but you will still be lucky to find monkeys eating the figs from few remaining trees.

100 crore grant Belgaum JAGORE

Belgaum is used to unwarranted discussions and debates on issues which are important for the development of the city but the citizens are never taken into confidence nor do they know what exactly is happening for development of their city.
In the past week or so the 10 crore special CM grant for the city has been the talk of the town, if not with common man at least within the journalists for sure.
The opposition in the corporation has been raising its voice against the manner in which the grant is been utilized. The corporators allege that they don’t know what works will happen in their ward, in fact the Mayor himself had quoted that he did not know that the works under said scheme were begun. They also alleged that not even a single meeting of the committee formed for the overlooking of the works of the said grant has taken place. Also all the tenders have been granted to a Andhra company.
Today Basavraj Bommai, minister in charge of Belgaum district said that the special grant was for the city and it had nothing to do with the approval or disapproval of the corporators. He further said the said grant has been given for the development of the city and the DC will over look the implementation of the same. The tenders for the same were called in by the urban development ministry and approved. A committee was formed with the DC being the chairman and MP and MLAs have given their points in the meeting.
In a contrast to Bommai’s words MP Suresh Angadi said that he never knew that there was committee formed for this purpose and he was never invited for the same. He also raised the question that if the grant was not given to the Belgaum Corporation then why that is on the tender document City Corporation was mentioned and also signed by the commissioner of the Corporation.
This will not end here it seems, but Belgaum and controversy always go hand in hand. It could be just anything but controversy will come along.

The mayor had written a letter asking the work to be stopped but then he again wrote a letter asking the work should not be stopped as he came to know that the fund is not related to the Corporation.
My question here is see the above images of the tender documents where the City corporation is mentioned and the corporation commissioner has signed it, so how has this been done, when the fund is not for the corporation.
The worst part I have observed is the works taken in various wards are small in nature and nothing big has been planned, then why is that these 100 crores are being wasted to make gutters, roads. Instead the same could have been used to make over bridges, new parks or for that matter new infrastructure. 100 crore is not a small amount but instead of spending in small amounts something good for the city could have been planned which could help the city in its development.
Belgaum is supposed to be a cool and calm city with its citizens almost blindly believing what they hear. But now is the time to change. That fund was given for Belgaum and as citizens it should be the duty of the authorities implementing it ( it may be anyone here the corporation or the MLA’s or the DC) they should made public all the works that will be taken up by giving ads in various newspapers. People might say it’s there in the tender document but, my question is the Tender document accessible to all citizens.
People would now suggest making use of the RTI act to get info in this regard, but who will come forward is the big question, and even if someone does come up what after he gets the information. What about the dissemination of the information.
What Belgaum needs is a strong CITIZENS FORUM, which can have its say in such matters and also have the power to influence such works.

Here is an excerpt of an interview with the duo:
- What does your company make?
Servocontrols-->In simple terms we make many things, which are very small in nature but very essential. We make aerospace applications such as Engine control systems, Sensors, Servo valves, Actuators, Flight control systems, manifold systems for civil aircrafts and for space missions.
With all this, they are also present in other markets like Fluid power, Steel mills, Power generation, Plastic & Rubber manufacturing, Petroleum, material testing, mobile hydraulics, General factory automation, construction equipments, ground testing & test rigs to mention a few.
- How did servocontrols start?
Servocontrols--> Deepak was working in the USA in the aerospace industry and his brother here Dinesh was keen to start something of his own, he did not want a boss on him. Therefore, he asked his brother whether they could start something. The call was right, Deepak had on his mind to come back to hometown Belgaum and do something there rather than be in the US. In 2002, Deepak came down to India and while coming back his colleagues in the US said, you go now and we are sure you will come back in 6 months. However, it was not so, both of them had a never die attitude in them and with very little money in hand they started servicing the servo valves and distribution of sensors from their house garage. Nevertheless, the brother duo was firm they had the knowledge and they can succeed and in 2005 we shifted to their new office in Udayambag.
- What were the hardships you faced?
Servocontrols--> Hardships, from day one. We had little money and our father who is a banker was not so keen on our venture. However, some how we managed to convince him, we began, and now that we have reached here, he believes we have done something good.
Servocontrols was started in the garage with just two of us, we began servicing of the valves, and we never looked back.
We faced problems with everything but we were sure to overcome them and we did that. Numerous people have visited our office and site, which includes the scientist’s community from India and abroad, topnotch officials of the fortune 500 companies.
- Why did you choose Belgaum for such a technical industry?
Servocontrols--> When we decided to start this we were told to start it in Bangalore, Hyderabad or Noida, but we said Belgaum, our hometown. We wanted to do contribute our bit to Belgaum and that is the sole reason for us to start in Belgaum.
- Was it easy to start in Belgaum?
Servocontrols--> Easy to start in Belgaum, no not at all. We had problems from day one. People never knew where this Belgaum is. Clients used to think its near Bangalore and they used to call us in the morning saying we will see you in 1 hour and then we told them it is not so near its far off.
The air connectivity is the greatest hindrance to us. With no connectivity now we have to shuffle between Hubli and Kolhapur and get clients back and forth from there. Most people now days prefer to have a day visit with no over night stay, but the same cannot be done in Belgaum due to no air connectivity. A few international clients who took the Goa route to Belgaum said its better we land in Mumbai and come by road and when they are here we face hospitality problems as there not so good or star hotels.
We feel even if the Belgaum airport is not operational, it would be fine but the road to Goa should be improved. As Goa has international connectivity and if (this is a big IF) we have good 4 laned roads like towards Kolhapur people can fly to Goa and take a drive to Belgaum. However, here nothing seems to be working, nor the Sambara airport nor the Road to Goa.
No doubt, we are on the golden quadrilateral but we face countless logistical tribulations. The train frequency should be increased on both ways Bangalore and Mumbai.
This was one part another major part is the government regulations. In the budgets, so many exemptions are awarded to entrepreneurs but in real, we never get it due to lack of efficiency in local and inter departmental procedures. It is eyewash. VAT, Customs, Excise, DIC, ESI and so many others regulations in which most of our energy goes by.
Belgaum has lacked branding and even now we still need to tell people where Belgaum is and what it has in store.
- How many employees?
Servocontrols--> At present we have 156 employees and all are from Belgaum and neighboring villages. We do not have very highly qualified employees but what we have is able persons who have been trained by us to get the best out of them.
We need engineers from all fields mechanical, civil, IT, electronics and B.Sc. Most pf our employees are not highly qualified but we train them in such way to get the best for the company. We believe that as we have started this company here there will be so many others with their roots in Belgaum who want to work here. We have many employees from neighboring villages that operate the computers, use the Internet, operate and when foreign delegations come over explain to them the whole procedure.
- Your future plans.
Servocontrols--> Future looks bright even in this recession. In addition, as we are spread over a wide range of activities and industries we can expect a slowdown in one and an upward movement in another. We have finalized land for our new factory and we hope to begin work there soon. Revenue is equally divided in terms of Rupees and foreign currency we do not se much impact of the recession and appreciating rupee. In this kind of market, also we are exporting to China, which is supposed to be the cheapest in the world.
- What is that you like about Belgaum?
Servocontrols--> Best thing in about Belgaum is its People, the environment, the cost and the talent. So many people have their roots in Belgaum, they all should come and start up here and pay back to Belgaum.
- What would you say about this Site AAB?
Servocontrols--> Well this site has always helped recently to be in touch with Belgaum. I was recently abroad for a conference and I used to check the site daily so that I can know what is happening in my hometown. The job team AAB is doing is commendable. All the best!

100 crore tug of war

A tug of war and fight for a chair is common in politics, but Belgaum is different from the lot. Here we have 100 crore as a special grant from the CM and we have tug of war between the elected members of the Corporation & a couple of MLA’s together on side and all other members of the corporation, MPs’ on the other side and we the general public have to just see the war.
In the past week or so this 100 crore topic is heavily debated all around the city. In fact some work under the said 100 crore project was begun by MLA Abhay Patil and Feroz Sait in their constituencies and the Mayor of the city did not know about it. The Mayor and other officials of the Govt. comprise of the panel which overlooks the whole work under the 100 crore project, but here our Mayor Yallappa Kurbar did not know about the work commencement. He under pressure of the Marathi corporators gave letter in writing to the authorities to stop all work under the said scheme and called for a meeting on the 9th October to discuss the issue.
It is learnt from sources that today the mayor has sent a letter to the CM along with signatures of 40 other elected representatives asking the CM to look into the matter and stop the ongoing work. But later it is heard that he has canceled the meeting the called on the 9th under pressure.
My simple question to the MLA’s and others here is if this work is for betterment of Belgaum why it that the work is made public as to what and where these funds are being utilized. The tender document contains details but is that it’s the actual work or has it been altered is not mentioned anywhere as there was a talk about it.
MLA Abhay Patil openly said that no one can dare stop the ongoing works, why this scuffle? If you are doing a good job by doing some work get it in front of the people. Let the people decide, after all it’s the public who have got you that MLA seat.
What happens from here on in this issue God knows? Will Belgaum get better in any ways? Or is it that this 100 crore will go back to the CM? Can’t say …..

Mayor not informed about 100 crore development works

In a written statement to the opposition, Mayor Yallappa Kurubar on Saturday said that, he had no information about the works being undertaken in the city under the Rs.100 crore special funds from the CM.
Members of the opposition raised the issue and took the mayor to task. The members asked him to stop the work, which MLA (Belgaum South) Abhay Patil inaugurated on Saturday itself, thus violating the protocol.
DC & District in-charge minister are member of the committee to monitor the works under this special grant. Mayor, deputy mayor and city corporation commissioner are also members of the committee. The members asked how the work could start without consent of the mayor, other members and chairman of the committee.
Commissioner S G Patil said, he did not have the authority to stop the work. The mayor also told them he would call for a meeting on October 9, to discuss the sanction of over Rs 100 crore grant for development works in the city.

Harmonious Father and son combo Dr.Sudhanshu Sarang Kulkarni

Dr.Sudhanshu Kulkarni and his son Sarang are on a mission exploring and infusing divinity in harmonium with the ultimate objective of elevating this reed instrument with western origin in use as an accompanying instrument to the level of solo playing. Both have performed solo and jugalbandi as well.
Dr.Sudhanshu Kulkarni:
Of late, there is a paradigm shift in Hindustani Instrumental music wherein even folk instruments like Santoor have found place in classical music and recognized for solo performances which would not have been possible without a dedicated and committed approach. What one needs is to infuse divinity, similar to a sculptor who chisels off the unwanted to create beautiful and divine structures that are held in highest reverence. It is characteristically distinct approach to harmonium playing which position Sudhanshu on a different and worthy footing.
- Dr.Sudhanshu along with Pt.Bhimsen joshi
A commerce graduate and diploma holder in personal management, Sudhanshu took to music when he was ten years old with initial inspiration coming from a latent musical environment at home. He was identified as a child prodigy mix-way through his training in fundamentals of classical music including vocal and tabla under late Appasaheb Laxman Sakhalkar. Six years later, he went into the tutelage of Pt.Rambhau K.Bijapure one of the noteworthy harmonium maestros of the time and a great 'guru' under whose able guidance Sudhanshu's musical personality was molded.
Having graduated the degree of Sangeet Alankar & Masters degree in Music from Shvaji University, Kolhapur, Sudhanshu is the first in country to obtain Doctorate in Music (Sangeet Pravin) from Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai in solo harmonium under the guidance of Pt.Narayanrao V.Patwardhan of Vadodra.
He also holds Sangeet Vidwat awarded by Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board besides the title of Surmani conferred upon him in the prestigious Kal-Ke Kalakar Sammelan organised by Sur-Singar Sansad of Mumbai in 1983. Presently, a B-high grade harmonium artist of AIR, has performed in many prestigious music festivals and conferences like Sawai gandharva Punytithi Mahotsav at Kudgol, Swami Haridas Sammelan (Mumbai),Maharshtra Sangeet Sammelan (Goa). He accompanied great stalwarts like Late Dr.Gangubai Hangal in India, Holland, England and India festival in Germany; Pt.Bhimsen Joshi, Late Pt.Kumar Gandharva ,Late Pt.K.G.Ginde, Pt.Prabhakar Karekar, Dr.Prabha Atre, Smt.Malini Rajurkar, Begum Parween Sultana, Smt.Padma Talwalkar, Smt.Veena Sahasrabudhye (International Vocal festival in Sweeden in 1994, U.S.A. and Canada in 1996), Ubhaygaan Vidushi Dr.Shyamala Bhave and a lot of other luminaries of Hindustani music.
His natural inclination to render solo harmonium inspired him to ensure recognition to solo harmonium playing from authoritative institutions like AIR & Doordarshan, connoisseurs and Critics. Despite certain limitations in harmonium, it is easy to play but difficult to render in individual capacity at advance level, but through a dedicated approach and back breaking riyaz under the able taleem from his guru, his creative instinct got shaped into a highly distinguished musical repertoire, so much that he has carved a niche for himself as an eminent harmonium player and stands tall along with other renowned contemporaries. In his sincere urge to reach higher levels of musical excellence and create a new genre of harmonium players, he founded Surel Sanvadini, Sanvardhan and running Academy of Music with present student strength of about 100.
With his fingers highly affectionate to the keys, his harmonics traverse through a gentle repertoire of Kirana Gharana where both musical melody and abstract personification of the spirit of raga finds stately statement in the emergence of true shades of swears and establishment of the raga in its sublime ambience coalescing both the performer as well as the listener towards a meditatively musical experience the ultimate objective of music. Hs fluency in classical music comes through a deep involvement and understanding of both physics and philosophy of raga as well as the instrument when he is with the instrument; the reeds get poetic, statement with a degree of musical sense and his entire faculties cascade into a true musical melody. His experimentation to reduce the bulk of the present conventional harmonium and using diatonic mode is a matter of convenience as it provides versatility
Sarang Kulkarni:
Sarang son of Dr.Sudhanshu Kulkarni is a prominent face of the new generation ofclassical musicians. Like father, Sarang is a child prodigy and has gained immense knowledge from his father from age of four.
Sarang is masters in Management and holds a degree of Sangeet Visharad from Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai and presently is perusing M.A. in Harmonium at Shivaji University, Kolhapur. Sarang has won various Government of India scholarships and various awards at this young age.
He has performed solo harmonium programmes at several places like Dadar Matung Cultural Center Mumbai, Dasara Mahotsava Mysore, Pallavotsava Mysore, Das Naik memorial trust, Calicut, Pt. Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha Bangalore, Yuva-Chetana Mahotsav Koppal, Savai Gandharva Punyatithi Mahotsava Kundagol, Akhil Bhatratiya Gandharva Mahvidyalay Mandal conference at Belgaum, Karkal Sangeet Sabha Karkal and in many other cities like Goa, Kolhapur, Thiruvananthapuram, Dharwad, Hubli,Bhairav-Kalyan Utsav, Mangalore etc.
Sarang has also composed music under the genre classical and fusion in the name K.Sarang.
Sarang also plays classical music on keyboard. He is a specialist in quality harmonium manufacturing and tuning and runs his own harmonium- manufacturing unit under the name ‘Sarang Musicals' in Belgaum and ‘Jayrang Musicals' House' in Panaji Goa.
Questions:
1. You got yourself groomed by Pt.Rambhau Bijapure some experiences with the great master?
Kulkarni --> As a Guru he is the best. Especially his way of teaching is ultimate. He has a tremendous experience in molding the student. He is not merely a guru but a friend, philosopher and guide. He has molded me as per my nature of fingers. I can proudly say that whatever I have achieved so far in Music field is because of him only.
2. Has being in Belgaum helped you in your musical career or do you think otherwise?
Kulkarni --> I could have done a lot more music activities if I had not settled in Belgaum.
3. What are your thoughts on the young generation being taken away with rock and pop?
Kulkarni --> "Duniya Zukati Hai Zukane Wala Chahiye" this is the tendency of young generation. The youngsters are not yet understood the supremacy of our music and culture. I think it’s the globalization effect.
4. Your thoughts on the upcoming talent in Belgaum how can one groom oneself being here.
Kulkarni --> Belgaum has very rich tradition of upcoming talents but there is not a single institution like SRA (Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata). Belgaum talent has very limited scope to make career in music.
5. What is that you wish Belgaum had for music lovers like you?
Kulkarni --> I wish Belgaum had a nice auditorium only for music, dance and drama purpose.
6. Tell us more about your music school.
Kulkarni --> This year is a Silver Jubilee Year of our Institute. Established in 1984 with blessings of Pt.R.K.Bijapure the institute imparts training in gurukul style in various field of music like harmonium, vocal, tabala, Keyboard, Guitar & Vance under the able guidance of Dr.Sudhanshu Kulkarni, Mrs.Rohini Kulkarni, Mr.Sarang Kulkarni, Mr.Dayanand Kamat, Mr.Victor Francis, Miss.Swanandi Kulkarni and Mr.Aditya Paranjape.
The academy trains aspiring artistes for the junior and senior grades, besides the ‘Sangeet Alankar’ (Gandharva Mahavidyalala Mandal, Mumbai equivalent of M.A.) In harmonium, vocal and tabla. The academy also organizes monthly programmes of instruments and vocal besides special programmes on the eve of Krishna Janmashtami, Basant Panchami &guru poornima & lectures & workshops for students on special occasions. The institute has its own auditorium with capacity of 200 people and own sound system. The academy also organizes programmes of various established and upcoming artists.
7. Was Sarang’s entry into music natural or you really wanted him to be one?
Kulkarni --> Yes it was a natural entry.
8. You and Sarang have performed many jugalbandi’s but is there any jugalbandi on a personal level as well, does the generation gap come in between.
Kulkarni --> Generation Gap is playing its role and I appreciate if those are good even though I can’t do it. He is a good potentiality in marketing our music (Especially Harmonium solo)
9. You tour so much which is your favorite place and why?
Kulkarni --> Paris, because the Harmonium was founded in Paris and it has very great cultural heritage.
10. Your future plans?

Kulkarni --> I have traveled and I still travel with great stalwarts in Indi and abroad so each and every programme with those artistes is a great experience for me.
12. What is the best thing about Belgaum you like?
Kulkarni --> Belgaum has a rich cultural heritage. Many great stalwarts in music field have a close relation with Belgaum. Rather I would say Belgaum has given many artistes to Music field.
13. What are your thoughts on this website?
Kulkarni --> It’s the only website to take Belgaum artistes to Global platform. My best wishes to AllAboutbelgaum. Cheers

Rains causing havoc in North Karnataka
Untimely rains caused due to the low pressure formed over the Bay of Bengal is causing havoc in North Karnataka; major districts affected are Belgaum, Bagalokot, Bijapur, Raichur & Gulburga.
More than 40 people have been reported dead from Gulbraga, Raichur, Koppal, Karwar, Bijapur Gadag and Dharwad combined.
In a shocking accident, 6 people, including 3 children and a teenager were washed away in Masagnal village near Koppal, as the Innova car they were traveling in, attempted to cross a flooded bridge, on Friday morning. Dr Shivaram Pille, of Belgaum, the sole survivor from the ill-fated vehicle, lost his entire family consisting of his wife Dr. Radharani (32), daughters Akshata (9) and Aishwaraya (5), and son Rohit (6).
The Belgaum Amboli road is blocked for traffic and the Mumbai Panji highway is also closed to traffic due to flooding.
Haripriya express to Tirupati/Hyderabad was cancelled yesterday and same could be today as well. People taking the Haripriya express kindly confirm its departure today.
State transport buses which had left to Hyderabad returned today early morning from Raichur as a part of the highway was washed away.
A few cases of wall & roof collapses have been reported from Belgaum city as well but there has been no loss of life.
Rains have taken a break since yesterday and even today it’s very cloudy but it’s not pouring.
