Myth busting CA profession
The profession of a practicing Chartered Accountant is having a romance with Taxation (pun unintended), since its inception. In early days of our Independence, tax rates were very high and there was a dire need for professionals like CA for tax planning. But, 60 years hence, the CA is still viewed as a Tax consultant and expert. Taxation though influences Management decision making even today, is not the sole criteria to start, shut or run a business. There are other areas where a CA proves to be of vital importance. There is a galore of untapped areas waiting there in the wild to be harnessed, especially in a city like Belgaum.
The object of this write up is to break a myth or two about a CA and make the public aware of the type of services a CA is equipped to provide. The various areas, which are illustrative only, where a CA can be helpful, are:
Information System Audit: In this era of technology, a CA well equipped with IT skills (and it is part of the CA curriculum!), combined with his in-depth knowledge of internal controls, can help Management to strengthen their IT structure to protect their organisation’s assets.
Internal Audit: Adds value and improve an organisation’s operations. It is a valuable addition to an Enterprise’s internal control. Includes Management audit, Operational audit, Compliance audit etc.
3. Consultancy and Advisory services: In the areas of Foreign Trade Policy and procedures; setting up or developing 100 % EOU, SEZ, etc; compliance with various national rules and regulations including but not only restricted to Taxation like FEMA, labour laws etc; Finance Management and many other multifarious areas.
Corporate Governance: Design code for the same, design Risk Management framework, Internal control framework
Business valuations: like for Mergers and Acquisitions and takeover of another business.
Forensic accounting: Which deal with Financial Fraud detection and investigation, misappropriation of assets, conflict of interests where a CA acts as a financial detective.
ERP implementation and design: where a CA is an indispensable professional who can be relied right from the system design stage up to post-implementation.

The above are a few areas which I can muster up at the time of this writing. The sheer scope of services provided is breathtaking.
Aspiring and existing CAs should aim at providing such services and not only restrict to Taxation and traditional audits.
The business community of Belgaum, irrespective of size or nature, who avail the services of a CA or not at present, should view the above services provided by a CA as a value addition and indispensable and benefit from the same.

Voter Facilitation Centres opened in Belgaum

Belgaum South constituency: VFC at Kalamandir, 1st gate
Belgaum North constituency: VFC at Office of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board in Visvesvaraya Nagar
The centres will function from 8 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. except on Monday. On Sunday’s they will function from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. For any clarification, Assistant Returning Officer Uday S. Kulkarni (Belgaum South) could be contacted on 9611738850 and ARO B.D. Gugaratti (Belgaum North) on 9448453789.
VFC is a single window agency for registration of voters and issue of Elector Photo Identity Card. The elector can carry out modifications in the electoral roll, if required.
The voter can also know about the part in which his or her name has been listed and also concerned polling station at these centres. In case the name of the elector is not included in the voter list, he or she could register afresh.

Wedding on OF VALENTINES: Muthalik in Belgaum for Valentine’s Day

Addressing a media conference here today, he said that he would arrange the marriage of boys and girls found celebrating Valentine's Day only with the consent of their parents.
The boy and girl would be handed over to the Police if the parents oppose the marriage. "Let the parents get their children released from the Police custody.
Earlier, he had threatened that the Sene activists, who will be accompanied by purohits, would perform the marriage of the pairs spotted on Valentine's Day.
Reacting to the campaign of women's organisations of sending pink underwear to Sene activists, Mutalik declared that the Sene would gift pink sarees to such women.
Muthalik will be in Belgaum for Valentine’s Day.
Own dream house in Belgaum: Wait & Watch

The prices of flats have come down but that’s attributed to the reduction in cost of raw materials and nothing else and the decrease is also not commendable.
All are doing a wait and watch policy here. People interested in buying are not yet making a decision yet. The buyers expect the prices to go down but the builders don’t.
One more notable factor I realized is that as other companies are reducing their costs on advertising the Real estate companies are increasing the spend at least in Belgaum. Huge hoardings of Queens court, Heda Builders are up in many places in the city. There are another few also I have seen like Nasco developers.

Shri Ram Sene activists are all set to restrict couples on Valentine Day in Belgaum.
A anti V- Day campaign will be run until Feb.14 in the city by about 500 activists.
Letters have been furnished to hotel owners, principals of the colleges, student representatives, greeting cart and gift sellers, Flower vendors as well as to wardens of the both boys and girls hostels, comprising the request matter of ‘guide the students not to celebrate V-Day for the sake of Indian culture’.
All public gardens, open estates, hotels and restaurants, cinema theaters and also the places noted for couples sanctuary like Kittur Chennamma garden, Vaijnath road as well as extension places- Bhootaramanahatti garden and Rakaskop lake areas will be under watch of the Sene activist on the day.
Any unmarried couple appears on the day should require to prove their relationship with each other, whether they wandering with or without consent of their parents. "If any couple will look in an uneasy attitude, we can bind them in wedding knout on the spot" Pawar added. Replying to the question, forcing couple for marriage is not an illegal? He said, "Whatever those couple can do that also be an illegal and against the Indian culture. We are trying to give massage to the society that V-Day culture is not ours, Celebrate love but not fix up particular day for that. We apposing only the V-Day but not love or lovers" he clarified.
