What is this Place known as?PARSI TEMPLE

10:26 AM Posted by ukmad

PARSI TEMPLE (Agiyari), opposite Benyon Smith High School, Camp Belgaum.

The Parsi Temple in Belgaum was consecrated about 118 years ago. On December 9th 1891.The temple was built by Kurseji Pestonji Boyce. There is a Dharamshala, a guest house for Parsi travelers and also residences for the priest.

In the year 1920, the temple was handed over to the Anjuman for maintenance and for performing the daily rituals. The rituals essentially comprise of fire worship and prayers which are carried forth, five times a day. The chief priest is the only authorized person to perform these rituals. The first of the daily prayers is held immediately after sunrise, later in the noon, immediately after sunset, at night and the last worship is performed at 1am. Zorastrianism is a simple religion and has less of rituals and restrictions compared to other religion. The basic tenets only say that nothing should be done in excess. The prophet Zarathushtra, preached what is known as the "Golden Mean", which says that there should be no over indulgence in any given activity of human life. Parsi religion relies simply on good thoughts, good words and good deeds.

The religion recommends no fasting or abstinence for any religious function or observance of a ritual. There is no allowance for conversion in this religion. One cannot be converted to Zorashtrianism. This alone has caused for the diminishing of the community. Marriages outside the community are also forbidden and would lead to ex-communication in case of any violation of the dictum. Children of those excommunicated are barred from undergoing the "Navjyoth"or the initiation in to the religion.

"Farwasi", the bird like symbol is all embodying for the Parsis, as it conveys that the soul also has light and fire in it.

The temple is managed by the Anjuman which consists of five elected members. There are only two classes of Parsis-the priestly and the non-priestly class.

The entry into the Fire Temple is restricted only to the Parsi community. The once 2000 and odd number of community today has dwindled to less than 150 souls. At present there are only a few families left in Belgaum city.

Belgaum plays a new host

4:40 PM Posted by ukmad

Ever wondered what it takes to deploy and manage a server on the Web?

For the technical savvy they are Server, Bandwidth, Redundant Backup,
Redundant Power supply, Server Management, Server Management skills
etc to name a few.webhost_1200

In nonprofessional terms, it takes exceptional manpower round the clock and stellar infrastructure. eth1 Network Solutions a company in Belgaum  is
rendering remote server management in Linux/Unix have designed and
deployed a web hosting venture for hosting websites for the people of
Belgaum.
server
The server is a IBM e335 make with 2.0GHz processor, 250G hard drive
and 2G of RAM and runs the latest version of Apache (web server software), PHP and MySQL. Runs a bare minimum required for a production server and every piece of software used is compiled from source (Linux jargon -;)) for extracting every drop of performance from it.

The server is powered by two upstream Internet connections providing
redundancy. Backup of data happens locally over the network and using
rsync to an offshore server.

They currently provide custom plans depending on ones requirements.

Swapneel Patnekar, the founder of eth1 network Solutions says, "The
infrastructure we have placed is exactly the thing to host Web 2.0
websites driven by PHP/MySQL. Plus with 24/7 support, issues commonly
found in Web Hosting companies will be resolved in blazing fast
speeds, the local support touch will always help :-)"

The server does not run Control panel software such as cPanel/Plesk
etc. It is a bare bones server with minimum software. Any website/
CMS (Content Management System) such as Joomla, Drupal, Mambo, and Magneto etc will run without any problems. We provide FTP access to customer to upload their data, the website can easily be managed using the web  interface provided by above-mentioned applications.

In addition, they do not run a SMTP/POP3/IMAP server to provide stability for web site performance. For email, they strongly recommend, using Google Apps for your domain. With a web-hosting package, we can migrate email for your domain to Google Apps for no additional charge.

A web host plays a very vital role in the life and success of a Web site. You may have a wonderful website but if your server cannot withstand the traffic or is not secure, you will tend to loose all your readers as was happening with me earlier and then I shifted this blog to a better server. The bad part of the story is this blog is not hosted on his server.

So Belgaumites, now you have a new host locally to host your websites from Belgaum which will be all over the world and Swapneel has made Belgaum proud by being the first one to host websites from Belgaum.

The intervention of the Karnataka police brought the situation under control at Hindalga where a homage paying ceremony was organized in the memory of those killed on June 1, 1986   in the agitation against the Karnataka Government’s ‘Kannada Sakti’ which was organized by the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti.

The MES had organized a homage paying ceremony today at Hindalga. The internal spat within the Samiti between the City Samiti and Taluka Samiti came to the fore front.  Already there are two factions in the MES, one is led by Kiran Thakur and other is led by N D Patil. Both the factions paid their respects to the martyr’s in two different functions. There was a verbal spat between the Maloji Ashtekar led faction and the Deepak Dalvi city faction. The Taluka samiti leaders were alleging that the City samiti were not working actively.

Cell phones banned for Cop use

10:11 AM Posted by ukmad

M Shivshankar, Belgaum traffic inspector as a part of reforming the Belgaum traffic and also the people behind keeping it straight has ordered his men, traffic cops not to use Mobiles on duty.

Now it is mandatory for cops to deposit the cell phones at a particular police station before they could go for work. Anyone who is found violating this would be punished, the inspector said. The rule came into effect to ensure that traffic policemen are not diverted from the call of duty and their concentration is not diverted while on duty.

Giving the cops some relief, Shivshankar said that the cops on duty could use the wireless phones with them to send some emergency messages to their families.   It has been a rule that cops cannot use cell phones but it was not strictly implemented, in Belgaum it is being tried.

The cops peeved by this rule but no one has gone against it either.

Acute water scarcity in Belgaum

10:17 AM Posted by ukmad

Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board (KUWSSB) took a break for its annual maintenance work all of a sudden and for the fourth day in a row many parts of the city did not get any water.

KUWSSB was supplying water once in three days to the city barring the 24x7 wards, but even the 24x7 wards have been affected.

The annual maintenance is being carried out for pipeline repair works and patching the leakages at Hidkal.  Taking stock of this grave situation the private water suppliers are making swift money. They charged Rs. 500 for one tanker of water when the normal rate is between Rs. 350 and Rs. 400.

Hopefully, water supply would be restored by Saturday morning.

Mayor’s hindrance to development work

10:55 AM Posted by ukmad

Past Mayor Prashanta Budavi had sanctioned various development works under her regime worth Rs.1 crore which included 1 lakh worth electrical and 43 lakhs of other developmental works in all wards. But the newly elected Mayor Yallpa Kurbar has shown his red signal to these sanctioned development works by sending a letter of non recommendation to Commissioner on May 14 asking not to go further with those works.

All these allegations were made by Kiran Sayanak.
