Beautiful picnic trekking spot near Belgaum Nersa and Godholi

In my constant endeavor to give readers information, which others do not, here is another effort on the same lines.

Belgaum is situated very near to nature and many spots near about 40 kms from the city are unknown to many and undiscovered.

Here is one great spot.

This is the beautiful picnic / trekking spot.

 Nersa

It is just 40 kms. Away from Belgaum and 15 kms from Khanapur.

This is MANDAVI River, which flows to Goa. This Place is after Nersa, which is 15 kms away from Khanapur.

 How to reach there:

40 kms from Belgaum 15 kms from Khanapur.

After Khanapur, take a right turn. Lot of banana plantation is going on due to ample water availability. You can park your vehicle just after Nersa and either go walking or take a vehicle from Nersa because road condition is worst.

There are locals there who can help you get vehicles, to be on the safer side it is suggested to do a pilot trip first and then one could go along with a huge group. You won’t get anything to eat so take along all your food and water, if you want go there cook you can do that also.

The best time to go there would be after the rains, all the photos were taken on 14th June, 2009 so you can see crystal clear water there for all to indulge into. As there is no road it is best to go after the rains.

 Godholi:

Hill station like atmosphere at Godholi. This place is 15 kms from Nersa.

You reach to Godholi, which is just like a Matheran, a beautiful hill station. There is a table top before Godholi where one can halt for a night. There are no resorts as yet all is in nature’s best way. You can do a campfire, but I would suggest a day out trip to be on a safer side.

Acute water scarcity in Belgaum

10:17 AM Posted by ukmad

Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board (KUWSSB) took a break for its annual maintenance work all of a sudden and for the fourth day in a row many parts of the city did not get any water.

KUWSSB was supplying water once in three days to the city barring the 24x7 wards, but even the 24x7 wards have been affected.

The annual maintenance is being carried out for pipeline repair works and patching the leakages at Hidkal.  Taking stock of this grave situation the private water suppliers are making swift money. They charged Rs. 500 for one tanker of water when the normal rate is between Rs. 350 and Rs. 400.

Hopefully, water supply would be restored by Saturday morning.

Old well now garbage spot

Ground water levels are over the world is decreasing and Belgaum is no exception to it. Curently the Camp areas have no water supply for 3 days and the city areas are also getting very little supply.

See the photo, an old well which must be older than 60 – 70 years in Kelkar Bag, next to Belgaum Bhavan is now a garbage point, where all the vegetable sellers have thrown the garbage and filled it up completely.

In fact many such cases exist in many areas in the city. The worst case I know is of the closure of the 12 pulleys well (Bara Ghadghdyache Vhir) which was in front of Kaveri Cold Drinks in Hutatma chowk which was closed in somewhere around 1966 when the Munciplaity water lines were being laid.

Water conservation is very important, now all new buildings have to have the rain water harvesting but what about these assets, those old wells if are given a rebirth can help overcome water shortage the city is facing.

All wards in Belgaum to get 24x7 water supply

2:50 PM Posted by ukmad

A decision has been taken in Bangalore to extend 24/7 drinking water supply scheme to all wards of Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum and Gulbarga city corporations, and work on the scheme would be commence in a couple of months. Now, the scheme has been successfully implemented on a pilot basis in eight wards of three corporations and the Department has decided to cover all wards in three corporations, which would solve the water problem, in three corporations. Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board is implementing the said scheme.

Hence, all the wards will get 24x7 water supply once the scheme is implemented. Presently only 8 wards get 24x7 water supply where as other wards get water once in two days.

Water Tariff hiked for 24x7 wards

Water Tariff hiked for 24x7 wards

The Belgaum City Corporation on Monday, unanimously adopted a resolution to implement new tariff for water connections under the 24x7 drinking water supply scheme in the city.

The new tariff will be effective in the 10 wards only having the 24x7 water supply.

This very blog had broken the story on 30 August 2008, http://belgaumblog.com/2008/08/water-prices-increase-by-a-whopping-42/

Opposition members, who strongly opposed the proposal, said that people were already overburdened with inflation and price rise. It was not fair on the part of the civic body to impose additional burden on them. See this link for a complete understanding of the tariff structure already posted on this blog.

This hike in prices will be a added calamity on the poor people. All those who fall under the said 10 wards will have to pay the hiked tariff.

Belgaum Water tariff hike Update

10:14 AM Posted by ukmad

The proposal to hike water tariff for those getting 24x7 supply under the Karnataka Urban Water Sector Improvement Project is expected to come up for consideration in the next council meeting of Belgaum City Corporation (BCC).

Official sources in the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board said here on Saturday that the Government had directed the local municipalities to fix fresh tariff for drinking water wherever the 24/7 project had been implemented.

This blog was the first put this tariff hike problem. The same has been explained in this story of The Hindu. I had posted this story as the pamphlets were being distributed all over those areas 24x7 supply exists. The proposal still needs Corporations approval & then why is that the Water board is distributing the pamphlets was a question raised by a few residents.

Water Prices increase by a whopping 42%

10:48 AM Posted by ukmad

KUWASIP, the agency in charge of supplying water to Belgaum has increased the water prices for all uses by 42%.

This increase will be effective from August 2008 in the ward where there is 24-hour water supply. The wards where there is 24-hour water supply are ward no.3, 4,5,6,44,45 (full) & 7,8,46,48 (part).

The old rate was Minimum of Rs.83 for usage up to 15000 liters & Rs.5.60 per thousand liters later on.

Now in the new rates, a new slab has been created of 8000 liters.

New Rate per/1000 Liters

Old Rate

Rs.118
Rs.83
150001 to 25000

5.60 per/1000 Liters

Therefore, if your usage is of 15000 liters now you will have to shell Rs.118 versus the Rs.83 you were paying earlier, that is a whopping increase of 42%.

The minimum earlier was Rs.83 and now it is Rs.48 but first it was for 15000 liters and now it for 8000 liters.
When I spoke to a few residents in those areas, all were complaining that this increase is too much.

The water supplied to Belgaum and in some parts of Karnataka is managed by www.veoliawater.com, under the supervision of the water board.

The image is of the pamphlets the water board is giving to all. It was given in both Kannad & Marathi, I chose the marathi one as it was clear & I could understand the matter in it. (I want no confusion or comments on why I selected the marathi pamphlet)

This kind of increase is untold to I believe. In this time of high inflation, this kind of an increase will create more holes in the pockets.

Rakaskop reservoir has water for 3 months

8:27 AM Posted by ukmad

As the rain have taken a rest and this time the rest has been too long the Rakaskop reservoir has water which will last for 3 months only. What after that is the question?

Rains this time came beforetime but then suddenly disappeared. This has been a cause of worry now. Last year by July 7 the reservoir was full to its capacity of 2475 feet. Infact this may the reservoir recorded its highest ever water level in that month of 2450.1 feet.

Now its all on the rain God.
