Some excerpts of the interview with Madhuri M. Shanbhag :

  1. When did you start writing and what was your motivation behind the same?

Ans: Well I started late, when my son Manish started going to school, in 1989, I wrote one article and everybody praised it. Then I came to know that I have many more things to tell and the rest is history for me.

  1. What is that you first wrote?

Ans: The first article I wrote was a ‘lalitlekh’ on my favorite teacher Prof. V.G. Tilagul.

  1. In all your writings you seem to be influenced by science? Is that because you are a Physics professor?

Ans: Yes, science is something I am in love with, but actually its people which interest me more when it comes to writing. Most of my works are the result of my interest in people. For science, I love to pen influence of science on people.

  1. Agnipankh was a great success story for you, what inspired you to translate that biography into Marathi?

Ans: Well, I knew Dr. Kalam as a scientist in composites (smart materials), also the chief of five Indian missiles. When I read a small news item  about his autobiography, the son of an illiterate poor boatman of Rameshvar reaching  the highest civil honor, ‘Bharat-ratna’ completely on his merit and intelligence, I thought that it must be very interesting journey. And yes it is.Rests are the details like finding a publisher, who purchased rights and made a contract.

  1. How has been the support of your family towards all your work? You must have to make balance between home and work and also your writing?

Ans: I always feel that if you like to do something, you will find time. You even don’t mind forgoing your favorite pleasures. My husband Dr. Mohan Shanbhag is proud of me as a writer. Even my kids are very supportive about my writing. I was also taking care of the house. For a long time children, sansar and my teaching was my first priority.

  1. What do you like to do most teaching or writing?

Ans: Both are my favorite. Well, nowadays writing is in number one position.

  1. You have given lectures on so many varied topics and in various places can you narrate some good and bad incidents?

Ans: That will be a long answer. But at this point I will say that good incidences outnumber bad ones.

  1. What do you like to do when you are not working and also not writing?

Ans: I love to cook, particularly fish dishes. Then chat with my friends on phone, or netchat with my son and daughter. Surf on the net on my favorite sites. Read a book, well there are umpteen things I can think of.

  1. Are you working on something new these days, what is it another translation or fiction?

Ans: I am translating a book on Second World War, ‘Doctors from Hell’ by Vivien Spitz. I write one article ‘Kshitij’ every first Sunday of month in ‘Saptarang’ (Sunday special of Sakal daily.)

  1. Who are your idols?
Ans: Dr. Richard Feynman, (I am writing his biography), Dr.Kalam, JRD Tata, Chandra S. and many more in the field of science. Vijay Tendulkar, Dalavi, Arati Prabhu, G.A. Kulkarni,Shashi Deshapande,

  1. Reading of books has plummeted in the modern world your thoughts on this?

Ans: Yes, television and e-revolution has done that. But at least in India the literacy rate is increasing and very few have access to e-reading. Besides reading percolates in your mind and TV pictures just fly. You don’t remember the scenes you have seen yesterday till you see today’s episode. I do believe that books have lasting effect on you.

  1. What are your thoughts on this Site?

Ans: I have not gone through each and every detail,  I will do that very soon but the glimpse is very interesting. Keep it up

Saffron flag controversy is gaining ground Aage Kua Piche Khayi

11:39 AM Posted by ukmad

MP Suresh Angadi and MLA Sanjay Patil are now on the back foot as there are protests by the KRV. Angadi told The Hindu, and I quote “I will support it even if the KRV is ready to hoist a saffron flag, which has been and continues to be the symbol of our national pride since the times of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, The saffron flag symbolizes Hinduism and not the Kannada or Marathi linguistic community, as is being misunderstood by a few.”
The issue was deliberately raked up to project the BJP as “anti-Karnataka” during election time. The KRV ransacked the official chamber of Sanjay Patil, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, which is housed in Belgaum taluk panchayat office here on Tuesday.

On the other side another faction of the KRV attacked the office Suresh Angadi which is situated in the Cada office.

The KRV is demanding the withdrawal of the nomination of Angadi for the elections as they are supporting the hoisting of the saffron flag.

In another development on the same issue the District administration submitted its report to the chief election officer of the state on the roles played by the MP and MLA in the protest done by MES, however no notice of violation of code of conduct has been issued.

Its worst times for BJP now, “Aage Kua Piche Khayi”. If the Angadi supports the MES on the issue he can be in the race to get some Marathi votes, otherwise which is not very likely this time. People say, these politicians come when they want votes and this a just another example to it. The KRV is against Angadi’s support to MES saffron flag, so they are asking people not to vote for him. So where does the MP go “Aage Kua Piche Khayi”.

This time the Belgaum loksabha election could give some surprises, still the other candidate lists are not out so we just have to imagine but, for these years the Marathi-Kannada issue was never a issue of great importance during the Loksabha elections. Yes, for the assembly elections it is the only issue.

There has been no much disturbance after the delimitation of the constituencies. Belgaum Loksabha seat is made up of Arabhavi, Gokak, Belgaum Uttar, Belgaum Dakshin, Belgaum Rural, Bailhongal, Saundatti Yellamma and Ramdurg.

So be glued to the election fever the congress candidate names should be out in a day or two and other names also as the nomination process starts in the last week of March.

Elections are near: BJP now plays Marathi card on saffron flag issue

7:57 PM Posted by ukmad

As the MES and the Shivsena were agitating in front of the new corporation building demanding for the Saffron flag to be hoisted, it was surprise to see MP Suresh angadi and MLA Sanjay Patil come there and support the hoisting of the Saffron flag.

To go further Angadi said that, if L K Advani becomes the PM even the saffron flag will be hoisted on the parliament. Suresh Angadi and Snajay Pati land various others were arrested from the site and later released. There was complete road blockade on the road from RTO circle to Kolhapur Cross.

The Kannada Rakhsene Vedike burnt effigies of MLA Sanjay Patil and Suresh Angadi as they demanded the hoisting of the saffron flag. The KRV said they will never vote both of them again.
The BJP supporting the MS and Shivsena is nothing but playing the Marathi card as elections are near, and it’s for sure that if the Marathi votes don’t go in favor of BJP, then it would be very difficult for Angadi to win. MP Suresh Angadi even spoke in Marathi at the occasion and even Sanjay Patil.

May what it be, but the BCC is in news again for other reasons than it should be and the Marathi-Kannada spat will be the pivotal point again during the elections. Normally this has not been the issue for the Loksabha polls till date, but this time it seems Marathi- Kannada will affect and would be a major item of discussion during the upcoming elections.

MES stand for Safforn Flag

11:41 AM Posted by ukmad

The Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) has expressed its annoyance over the district administration’s decision not to allow hoisting of the bhagava (saffron) flag on the new administrative building of Belgaum City Corporation.

The MES will launch a protest against the same they said. The DC rejected the MES delegation plea stating that the High Court has directed that only the tri colour could flutter on the building. The flag will be hoisted or no will only come to know on 16th.

History of the Saffron Flag:

This flag hullabaloo dates back to July 3, 1958 when the Belgaum City Municipality (became a corporation in 1982) passed a resolution proposed by K SDeshpande and which was supported by Javalkar and Kudachikar, which stated that a Saffron colored flag be hoisted along with the National flag atop the Municipal building.
The government never cancelled that 1958 resolution so it was deemed as accepted. Unless there is a consensus, the saffron flag cannot be removed, it was said.

Mayor of Belgaum this time could be Marathi
At the fag end of the Mayors term of the Belgaum city Corporation the ruling Pro Kannada Sarvabhashik Samavichar Vedike seems to have a split and chances this time that the mayor could be from the Marathi group have strengthened.
The 29 Pro Kannada corporators who were able to elect Prashanta Budvai as the Mayor are now complaining that she did very little for the city in a corporation, which is dominated by Marathi group.
At her last meeting most of the corporators did not turn up and its now said they have formed a new forum. This is a successful conclusion for the Marathi group as they can come back to power in corporation where there has been Marathi mayor since its inception in 1984, except on two occasions.
Twenty-two corporators of the Sarvabhashik Samavichar Vedike, a forum of the pro-Kannada faction, have parted ways with it to form a new outfit.

52 yrs on, Maha-Karnataka boundary row still stirs emotions

4:24 PM Posted by ukmad

This is a PTI news bite pasted as on their site;
(PTI) Despite the over fifty-year old boundary dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka becoming a matter of less concern for the new generation, the issue continues to stir emotions among the votaries of merger of Marathi-speaking areas with the southern state.
As Karnataka prepares to hold Assembly session in Belgaum, a border district, the pro-merger groups revisit their long struggle and are hopeful of "justice".
Leaders of pro-unification Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) and politicians from Maharashtra, who participated in various agitations in Belgaum, said they were still awaiting the Supreme Court's verdict on the dispute, one of the last unresolved offshoots of the linguistic reorganisation.
"Justice delayed is justice denied. But we are still positive and hopeful that we will get justice," a top leader of MES, Kiran Thakur, told PTI.
MES has been observing November 1, the Rajyotsava Day (foundation day) of Karnataka as `Black Day' and January 17 as "martyrs day" every year to commemorate the martyrdom of five people from Belgaum who were killed in police firing protesting the decision to include the city in Karnataka.
The session starting in Belgaum from January 16 is the second since then Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy took the decision at the end of 2007. He had even announced that Belgaum would be developed as the second capital of Karnataka and Rs 100 crore would be spent for its development.
Karnataka sees the session as an opportunity to remove the feeling of alienation among the people of Belgaum and at the same time assert its right over the city. PTI

No permission has been given to MES to hold the session. The MES had planned to invite Maharashtra deputy CM Chagan Bhujbal and Raj Thackrey on January 16 for the Maha Melava as a parallel session to the legislative session to begin on the same day.
"MES is playing with the sentiments of Kannadigas and Marathis. But we will not get in their way. We'll intervene if they create law and order problems," Yeddyurappa said.
The material brought by the MES for the said Melva was confiscated by the police.

Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Narayan Gowda faction) has threatened to agitate if the Government allows the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) to organize “Maha-Melava”, proposed to be held on the same day as the first day of the Assembly session in Belgaum on January16.
If they were [ermitted to hold the Melva, then a seprate Melva for the Kannadigas would also be organized, KRV district president Rajveev Topannavar said.

Belgaum gets its second Kannada-speaking Mayor

7:59 AM Posted by ukmad

Source : The Hindu
SURPRISE WINNERS: Prashanta Shantinath Budavi (left) and Yunis B. Momin who were elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Belgaum respectively on Tuesday.
Belgaum: A Kannada-speaking candidate on Tuesday was elected Mayor of Belgaum, which is considered a stronghold of the Maharashtra Ekikarani Samiti (MES). The MES lost the Deputy Mayor’s post to an Urdu-speaking candidate.
Regional Commissioner, Amita Prasad, who officiated as Returning Officer, declared Prashanta Shantinath Budavi elected as Mayor and Yunis B. Momin elected as Deputy Mayor.
The post of Mayor was reserved for woman (general) and that of Deputy Mayor for “general”. Ms. Budavi and Mr. Momin polled 30 votes each as against 28 votes polled by MES candidates Neelima Paushe and Netaji Balu Mangutkar. The Kannada organisations and workers, who had all the reasons to celebrate the victory, had to be content with offering floral tributes to the statue of Rani Channamma at Channamma Circle, thanks to the prohibitory orders in force.
Ms. Budavi and Mr. Momin belong to Sarvabhashik Samvichar Vikas Vedike floated by a Kannada-Urdu speaking corporators with the help of a small breakaway group of MES led by the former Mayor Sambhaji Patil.
Belgaum MP Suresh C. Angadi, who did not vote in the past mayoral polls, yielded to pressure from the BJP leadership and Kananda groups and cast his vote in favour of the vedike candidates.
Thirty-seven-year-old Ms. Budavi hails from Kittur. She is the wife of Shantinath Budavi, City president of Kannada Rakshana Vedike. A home-maker, she represents Ward No.58 in the Council. Mr. Momin, 44, is a Science graduate and represents Ward No. 47 in the city.
However, Ms. Budavi is the second Kannada-speaking candidate to be elected Mayor. The first Kannada candidate who held the Mayor’s post was veteran Kannada leader Siddangouda Patil from June 30, 1991 to December 25, 1992.
The then Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government led by the former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh had yielded to pressure from Kannada organisations and on November 21, 2005 superseded the corporation Council headed by the then Mayor Vijay Pandurang More for taking a stand favouring merger of areas dominated by Marathi-speaking people in Belgaum with Maharashtra.
Ms. Budavi and Mr. Momin expressed their gratitude to SSVV members, their leader Sambhaji Patil and Mr. Angadi for their election.
The reservation for women has ensured 16 women being elected to the civic body in September 2007 polls. Ever since the formation of the corporation, four of the 19 Mayoral terms hitherto, were led by three women corporators. Vijayalakshmi Vishnu Chopde was the first woman Mayor who completed her term from February 15, 1996 to February 15, 1997.
Vandana Mohan Belgundkar was the only woman to have served two full mayoral terms in same Council from June 16, 2001 to June 19, 2002 and later again from September 3, 2004 to September 5, 2005. Neelima Chavhan was the third woman to head the Council from June 29, 2002 to June 29, 2003.
Also, five deputy mayoral terms were served by four women members — Kusuma Krishna Tapale (Mayor 24, 1990 to June 29, 1991), Gourabai Jaipal Londe (February 15, 1997 to March 30, 1998), Asma Tahsildar (April 17, 2000 to February 13, 2001) and Veena Kolkar (from June 16 to 19, 2001 and June 30, 2003 to September 3, 2004). Unity paid off
Mr. Angadi has attributed the victory of Kannada speaking candidate belonging to Sarvabhashik Samvichar Vikas Vedike as Mayor of the 58-member corporation to the vedike members who remained united until the end. He told The Hindu soon after the results of the Mayoral polls were declared here on Tuesday afternoon that the credit should go to all the corporators, including the Urdu and two Marathi-speaking corporators who were united under the banner of the vedike to create a history of sorts.
Nobody else could claim the success of the vedike candidates, he said. Kannada Rakshana Vedike’s office-bearer said that but Mr. Angadi’s vote, no body else in the city or district came forward to support the vedike.

Corporators come out of hibernation

4:51 PM Posted by ukmad

As the day to elect the Belgaum Mayor is fast approaching, the corporators who were cooling their heels for the last five months after winning the polls, are active again. If observed the present political scenario, the group of corporators led by Kannada group may sit on the driver’s seat to drive the Corporation bus.Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) has failed to gather the Marathi linguistic corporators under one roof and has adopted ‘wait and watch’ policy which indicates its helplessness.Even though the number of seats won by MES, non-MES Marathi linguistics, Kannada and Urdu groups are equal, non-Marathi factions has upper hand to rule the BCC as it has an extra vote of MP Suresh Angadi.MES has won 11 seats, Marathi linguistics 16, Kannada including Sambhajirao Patil and two of his supporters has 21 seats and eight corporators belong to the Urdu group.Urdu group, who will play a decision making role in holding power, had played a little political gimmick in the beginning to establish its importance. After the election, they had extended their support to Kannada group and announced its solidarity with the Kannada group. However, later, they decided to remain independent and kept their options open to back any faction that will support an Urdu candidate for the Mayor’s post. This decision by the Urdu group gave MES a re-birth, who made a vain bid to attract the Urdu group. However, the Urdu candidates refused to go with the MES and decided to remain with the Kannada group. It was decided that a Kannada corporator will be the Mayor, while an Urdu candidate will enjoy the powers of Deputy Mayor. It was also decided to keep four-time mayor Sambhajirao Patil away from the decision making process. Patil, who played vital role in electing mayors in previous terms, will now stay away from the mayoral activity.Even though it is an insult to Patil, he has no other option but to accept the Kannada group’s decision.According to latest developments, the Kannada candidates have suggested the names of Jyoti Bhavikatti and Shanta Uppar for the Mayor’s post. Jyoti is the favourate as Shanta was one of the six corporators who had cast their votes in favour of former mayor Vijay More in the last election. If things go according to the plan, Belgaum city will get second Kannada and Urdu linguistics mayor and deputy mayor. Siddangouda Patil and Nisarahmed Sanadi were the first Kannada and Urdu mayor and deputy mayor, respectively.Manda Balekundri, Latha Patil, Renu Killekar, Neelima Pawase, Anita Kitwadkar and Aruna Kutre are interested to contest for the mayor’s post from the MES camp.

New Jersey:voter registration in Gujarati.

8:10 AM Posted by ukmad

Residents of the US state of New Jersey will now be able to obtain voter registration material in Gujarati. New Jersey has a sizeable Gujarati population and this is first time that voter registration materials anywhere in the country will be available in a South Asian language.
Source:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Now_US_voter_registration_forms_in_Gujarati/rssarticleshow/2709670.cms

In a country like USA there is a Gujrati voter registration and in Belgaum, Karnataka, India where the majority population is Marathi speaking all the voter list and the application are in Kannada only.
http://belgaumblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/find-your-name-in-voters-list-be-ready.html That link has those voters list.

Infact there is a Supreme court ruling in this matter that if the percentage of a single language is more than 25% all the govt.Official documents should also be published in that particular language. But it has never happened.

I am not here to make another point and start the battle in between Marathi & Kannada speaking Belgaumites, But I just thought the Govt. there in the USA thinks that is the best way to collect the correct information then why not the same SENSE of working here also. That's my only point.

Lessons to learn from Past Kannada Marathi Unity

10:36 PM Posted by ukmad

This story is taken from my Associte Blog http://belgaumnri.blogspot.com/ .

I request my blog readers to think over the post (Last paragraph) I got from one of the old newsprint of Times of India. The wrong and right
Bringing Kannada marathi divide among Belgaumites : Utter wrong
Mr More's Balckening of face in Banglore : Utter Wrong( As a elected representative he have dignity of public servant and mainly respect as human being)Are not Kannadigas staying in Mumbai and Pune and Mahrashtra, are these Bangalorei so called Kannada abhimanis ( bloody Konga's-- migrants from Chennai), have these ever thought about them.Just look back into history after Babri Masjid issue the middle east started publishing jobs with the tag ( Only muslims and christens need to apply ) the discrminitaion is still on except for professionals who are invited by these countries.
Kumarswamis decison for holding winter session (if aimed as Belgaums devlopemnt and bridge regional imbalance gap then) : Right
Kumarswamis intention to divide our hearts of Belgaumites : Wrong.
I request all Belgaumites to stand above language to heal each other wounds and slap on these politicians face, Belgaum's devlopment should become our main interest , livilihood for everyone is all about the basic need for every human being. A tolerant society is my dream but want your eyes to share the same and if any one should open his eyes they should see Belgaum as the city for everyone,I am not a social reformer ,but do believe in thought process and mind power , ability of an individual to come up and stand out in the times of difficulties, we all might have seen "Rang de Basanti" , dont you all think our society need such awakening , and why not Belgaumite be trendsetters, Unity is strentgh but dont just leave it reading as bunch of words.
If it has happened in the past it can happened today.
Jan 2001 Times of India Belgaum: Is Belgaum city corporation (CCB) moving away from its language-based politics? the coming together of marathi and kannada groups for the second time in the history of bcc to elect the mayor was an indication towards this. and at the first meeting of the newly elected bcc members, a resolution to merge marathi-speaking areas of karnataka with maharashtra was rejected outright. it was a tradition of the bcc to pass such a resolution pleading with the union government to take an initiative to merge the border areas into maharashtra. the resolution was proposed by the mes and shiv sena, which received a setback when a section of marathi corporators, led by sambhaji rao patil, joined hands with kannada-urdu group to come to power. to the disappointment of mes-shiv sena, the ruling members passed another resolution giving a new twist to the long-standing border dispute between maharashtra and karnataka. the members made it clear that they would welcome any decision taken at the proposed meeting between karnataka and maharashtra at the initiative of pm vajpayee. this did not go well with the opposition. when mayor vandana belgundkar gave her ruling, the mes and shiv sena rushed to the well of the house and stalled the proceedings. mayor suspended the disrupting corporators and had to adjourn the house when they did not relent. the ``knockout punch'' came from sambhaji rao patil. he is an active and powerful pro-marathi leader in belgaum city. he said: ``they are not ready to resolve the border dispute. what they need is to keep the issue alive to reap political benefits.'' former mayor shivaji shuntkar earlier tabled the resolution, which was opposed by mlas ramesh kudchi and manohar kadolkar and sambhaji rao patil. the resolution states that belgaum, khanapur, nippanni, karwar, bidar, bhalki and other areas should be merged with maharashtra. it may be recalled that cm krishna had taken an initiative to create a platform for both marathi and kannada corporators to come together and prepare an agenda for the development of belgaum. He had also announced a special developmental package for belgaum.

We the Belgaumites

Dear Friends

At present, the district has 11 Marathi D.Ed colleges and the government has sanctioned 6 more for Marathi medium. The input of each college is 50 students out of, which 25 seats are being filled by government and 25 are from management quota. However, the private managements, which have opted for the D.Ed colleges, are not able to get the students as there is a sudden decrease in the number of students seeking admission, due to more number of colleges in the district
