Belgaum Goa road will not be widened

The Belgaum Goa road which is dire straits within the borders of Karnataka will now not be made into a 4 lane road as was planned earlier. To add to this nor is the Belgaum Chorla Goa road be done as the High court has stayed the work on a PIL.

The NH 4 A Belgaum Khanapur- Rmanagar- Anmod Goa highway was planned to be 4 a lane road but now it will be only 10 meters wide, in some places it is 5 to 7 meters now. A survey was done and as per the suggestions of the survey this road will now be a 10 meter road as per the National highways department.
Majority of the said road was to be in the green forest belt and there were practical problems for widening near Khanapur. Also another reason cited for not widening is another route Belgaum Chorla Goa route which will hamper the BOT (build operate Transfer) scheme. As there is an alternative road people would use that and toll collections would be hit.

The reason cited by the company surveying is economically correct but now the Chorla road work has also come to stand still after a order of the court on a PIL for saving the forest land. The 51 kms stretch from Peeranwadi to Chorla is though reserve forest land and the PIL made the same point as to how can the reserve forest land are used for roads.
Now for the common man it’s a loose loose situation. Nor this road nor that road, Anmod patch is in very bad condition still and with just 3 months for rains if nothing is done immediately you have it reaching Goa would be a great adventure. Even today most of the commuters take the Belgaum Savantawadi Goa route.

Let’s pray to God that the road be made as early as possible.

Forests or roads? Chorla Ghat

Wider roads will lead to increase in traffic, cutting of innumerable trees on the 65 km path, confrontation with wild animals and, above all, increased pollution.

As the world struggles with global warming, pollution, depleting forest and many such similar problems, it is strange how we think of our temporary gains at the cost of Mother Earth. Despite two existing and well maintained routes connecting Goa and Belgaum, there is an attempt to upgrade another one between Panaji and Belgaum via Chorla. This route runs through pristine forests of the Western Ghats and has been in existence for long. Last year the Government came up with a plan to double the width of this road. The present road is quite competent, if repaired well, to carry the present load of traffic.

These are the last tracts of forest remaining with a good amount of trees and wildlife. The elephants use this stretch of land as a corridor to go from one part of the jungle to another in search of water. Because of encroachment in their habitat, there have been several confrontations between elephants and the villagers and as water becomes scarce in summer, these animals are forced to come to areas with thin forest cover in search of water.

At a time when depleting forests and human interference are driving to extinction our co-citizens (wild animals), where is the need for another road? What is the harm in travelling an hour extra, if needed at all, through some beautiful forests rather than speeding in the desert?

Wider roads will lead to increase in traffic, cutting of innumerable trees on the 65 km path, confrontation with wild animals and, above all, increased pollution (noise, air, water). Studies show that there is a direct correlation between the felling of trees and the rainfall pattern in that area.
Rather than bigger roads, why not smaller vehicles? We cannot replace a forest by plantation; we cannot recreate a waterfall or nature. Therefore, we have no right to destroy it. Global warming is high on every country's agenda. We should not cut down our forests in the name of development in emulation of the West at a time when the US and Europe are reeling under the effects of global warming for want of forest cover.
Let this one track maintain the same width. If required, heavy vehicles can be restricted on this road. Let us make the intelligent decision of protecting our forests for our own well being.

The reservation for the post of Mayor and Dy.Mayor may be announced later in the day today. The post of mayor may be kept as open.

The Belgaum Chorla road is being rebuilt and the work has already commenced. The first part being the 18 km stretch from Peeranwadi. The full road will be 6 meters wide and 9 meters wide in the Ghat. The road will be built till the Goa border. After the road is complete Goa will be 50 kms nearer than the present. Hope this road is done fast as going to Goa is becoming a problem as the alternative road from Savatwadi is in very bad condition. So, the only option is from Anmod, where you have that 8kms of bad safari like ride.

A new road is being built to go to Nartaki Theatre from the Railway over bridge. The goods shed road will be leading to the new road being built.

All banks on strike tomorrow. So go to the bank today only as its holidays Friday, saturday and Sunday.
