The 81 kms stretch from Karnataka Goa border to Belgaum road NH 4A will be widened by IRB INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPERS LIMITED.

It is an Rs.800 crores project, out of which Rs.186 crores have been sanctioned right away to get the project into momentum.

The NHAI is taking up four laning and six laning of various roads in the country and this is also part of the same.

Once the new road is done it will bring Goa very close to Belgaum and the business with Goa will grow even more. The time for completion could be anywhere from 1 to 3 years, however officially nothing has been communicated.

Belgaum is Goans preferred destination

On a week end Belgaum is full of Goans. See Car Parking anywhere and you will see all GA, Goa registered cars. All hotels full to capacity with maximum visitors from Goa.

Geographical, cultural and ethnic proximity attract the Goans to Belgaum. They feel much cooler here than in Goa even when the temperatures have risen to 38 degrees Celsius in Belgaum. Goans normally combine their visit to town with shopping, health check up or just entertainment. KLE hospital (Dr.Prabhakar Kore Hospital) has been a great success story for Goans here. The Kadamba bus also had a drop point in the KLE.

All eating places are bursting and do brisk business on weekends. Many of the Catholics from Belgaum who have now settled in Goa and the still have their roots in here, make them come here often. Others just come here to do their shopping. The main factor is that the taste and variety suits the tastes of Goans which has also helped the local businessmen to grow. On a weekend Shahpur is filled with people from Goa shopping there mainly for Sarees. There are a few who go Big Bazaar as it is on the way from Goa. Shopping for fresh vegetables from Belgaum is a favorite for Goans. In fact majority vegetables sold in Goa are from Belgaum.

The routine of Goans is to some extent fixed. They come here more often than not on Friday afternoon; they do window shopping that evening after they have checked in to their favorite hotels like Anupam, Adarsh, Sanman now even Effa & Shankam, but Anupam is Goan favorite. Saturday morning is serious shopping from 9 am till night. For lunch or dinner the old favourite is Adinarayan and now only fish, but now Goans also throng the restaurants with regular Indian, Chinese cuisine, Gujrati thalis etc. Even Big Cinemas on weekend has majority Goan crowd. The Auto’s also do good business as normally the Goans Park the vehicles at the hotel and go around in Autos and the special Belgaum autos charge exorbitantly for which they are famous. Going back from town without Kunda is not a great sign; hence the sweet shops also keep themselves ready for the weekend.
The most important factor for Belgaum being the preferred destination is that the town has something for all classes of Goans. You may come in a Honda city or Kadamba bus Belgaum has something for all.
More Goans will perhaps come to Belgaum if the road infrastructure is enhanced. The road via Anmod has been repaired recently and via Chorla is yet be made. If we have roads like the Belgaum-Kolhapur 4 lane roads, the 154km odd distance would be very easily travelled in 3 hours and we could even get more traffic from Goa and vice versa.
So, on a weekend its busy times for Belgaumites serving the Goans and also making brisk money.

Belgaum Goa road will not be widened

The Belgaum Goa road which is dire straits within the borders of Karnataka will now not be made into a 4 lane road as was planned earlier. To add to this nor is the Belgaum Chorla Goa road be done as the High court has stayed the work on a PIL.

The NH 4 A Belgaum Khanapur- Rmanagar- Anmod Goa highway was planned to be 4 a lane road but now it will be only 10 meters wide, in some places it is 5 to 7 meters now. A survey was done and as per the suggestions of the survey this road will now be a 10 meter road as per the National highways department.
Majority of the said road was to be in the green forest belt and there were practical problems for widening near Khanapur. Also another reason cited for not widening is another route Belgaum Chorla Goa route which will hamper the BOT (build operate Transfer) scheme. As there is an alternative road people would use that and toll collections would be hit.

The reason cited by the company surveying is economically correct but now the Chorla road work has also come to stand still after a order of the court on a PIL for saving the forest land. The 51 kms stretch from Peeranwadi to Chorla is though reserve forest land and the PIL made the same point as to how can the reserve forest land are used for roads.
Now for the common man it’s a loose loose situation. Nor this road nor that road, Anmod patch is in very bad condition still and with just 3 months for rains if nothing is done immediately you have it reaching Goa would be a great adventure. Even today most of the commuters take the Belgaum Savantawadi Goa route.

Let’s pray to God that the road be made as early as possible.

The beginning of the tourist season in Goa also marks the beginning of increased drug peddling from the northern parts of India to the coastal state. Belgaum, the border district in Karnataka, has long been the ideal transit route for the drug peddlers.
Drugs worth Rs 60 crore were seized last year while this year till now more than 15 have been arrested, including some foreign nationals. Now, with the beginning of the tourist season in Goa, focus has shifted to Belgaum as well. Drug peddlers arrested here last year had indicated during interrogation that the drugs were meant for export to foreign destinations from Goa, while part of the quantity would also trickle down for local consumption.
Last year’s experience has forced the police to be on their toes now to check the flow of drugs from Belgaum and look out for any tip offs

I admire Reliance Fersh initiaitve to help farmers paying them directly and eliminating middlemen, I wish the Belgaum distribution unit would grow bigger in near future, creating employment and opportunities, Reliance fresh should tie up with Agricultureal collages in Belgaum to promote seed devlopment and more emphasis on biotic plantation then chemical and hybrid vegitables.

Goa’s reliance on vegetables and fruits from Belgaum could be under threat and competition has come in from an economic giant. The setting up of a vegetable procuring unit at Belgaum by ‘Reliance Fresh’, a division of Reliance Industries Ltd, to provide vegetables to its growing chain of outlets in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra may adversely affect the supply of vegetables to Goa in the near future.
Farmers in Belgaum are only too happy to offer their produce to Reliance at better rates and with the vegetable supply from Belgaum — predominantly meant for Goa — now likely to be diverted elsewhere, Goans would have to pay much more for the few vegetables that enter the Goan market.Incidentally, though Reliance Fresh intends to set up seven outlets in Goa at ‘cheaper rates’, the supply of vegetables would be too meagre to cater to the entire state. Reliance has recently set up a procuring unit at Halga, about 10 km from here, where vegetables are being purchased directly from farmers. “Vegetables purchased are being sent to Hyderabad and other places,” Suresh D, the unit manager at Halga said.At present, about 10 tonnes of vegetables are being procured by Reliance everyday and sources speculate that the demand would rise sharply with the growing number of retail outlets to be opened in the region. The unit at Halga is strategically based at the hub of the vegetable growing hinterland of Belgaum district, where more than 60% of the farmers in the district are engaged in growing vegetables.Sudhatai Hiremath, Secretary of the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), the apex body controlling the procurement and sale of vegetables and other farm produce, said Reliance has been issued licences to procure vegetables from farmers and the company has been promptly paying the cess to APMC. Officials disclosed that Reliance plans to open seven outlets in Goa and attempts are being made to supply farm-fresh vegetables from Belgaum at rates cheaper than that offered by the Belgaum vegetable traders. This is because Reliance will buy vegetables directly from farmers, eliminating middlemen in the process. “Our intention is to give justice to the farmers by offering them better rates for their produce,” said Aniruddin of Reliance. According to Umesh Patil — a vegetable wholesaler and member of the Cantonment Wholesale Vegetable Merchants Association — over 100 brokers supply vegetables to Goa and other coastal areas including Karwar, Kumta (Karnataka) and Sindhudurg (Maharashtra).“About 30 tempo loads of vegetables are supplied to Goa everyday and more than 70% of the vegetables from Belgaum are sent to the coastal areas,” said Patil. To a query on the impact of ‘Reliance Fresh’ on the prevailing supply of vegetables to Goa, Patil admitted that while the prices may not increase in the immediate future, the increase of Reliance outlets in the region could spark off a shortage of vegetables en route to Goa.Meanwhile, the farmers in the district are pleased with the new development, as they are being paid a better rate as compared to the brokers.“We do not have to bother about the brokerage and other costs that we earlier used to pay,” said a farmer.
