Rahul Deshpande is a freelance photographer based in Pune (originally from Belgaum), doing commercial and advertising work. He follows his passion of music by creating edgy promotional photos for established and upcoming bands and artists in Pune, Mumbai and Bangalore.

He is also actively involved in Pune's live music scene, playing the guitar with his band, NH4 as often as his schedule will allow.

Other passions include actively seeking and documenting fast disappearing arts and crafts through his private project - Rare Earth Media. His most recent initiative, "Detritus" is the exploration of colonial bungalows in the city of Belgaum some of which are in a state of dilapidation. It is both a study of nature reclaiming what it gave up over a century ago and the possibility of conserving a slice of colonial history.

Educated in Belgaum and the US, he has worked as an engineer on merchant ships, a teacher in inner-city schools, a project manager in investment banks and now as a photographer in India. An extremely well traveled photographer, Rahul has experienced life on the streets of New York City, Tokyo, Amsterdam and in a village in Kenya.

Though having received no formal training in his craft, he has attended numerous workshops under highly experienced photographers in New York.

He relies on his natural gift of connecting with people through photography, so a lot of his work will feature portraits and character studies.

Rahul is also active in the community of new media artists and shares his process of creation through his blog. His work is inspired and woven together by cinema, music and the sights and sounds of the street.

Rahul did his schooling from St.Pauls high School, his Pre University from GSS College, Bachelor of Engineering from GIT and Master of Science from New Jersey Institute of Technology.

His Solo photo exhibition is organized at

The Global Tree Cafe Art Wall, in Bangalore

Saturday 12th September 2009.

Brief Background of projects:

Kenya Unplugged:

Rahul traveled to Kenya earlier this year and spent time on the safari circuit in the Masai Mara and in the beach resort of Mombasa. This series is the result of an active effort to connect with ethnic communities and doing exactly what a tourist is advised NOT to do while in Africa. On the "do not do" list were warnings against wandering off alone, traveling on the local "Matatu" buses and not socializing with the locals beyond small talk. Rahul did wander off alone, traveled extensively on matatus and even visited remote villages, sharing meals, performing in ritual dances and of course taking photographs.rd4rd3

The first part of this series was created in Masai and Samburu villages bordering the Masai Mara National Park, where he was witness to the daily life of the people and spent time trying to converse with them using hand gestures and the most powerful currency in the world - a smile! The portraits he created are a result of those interactions.

The second part of the series was created in the village of Bombo, some 35 km north of the city of Mombasa. After the usual jetski rides and snorkeling trip, the instinct to wander eventually got the better of him. Accompanied by a local “beach boy”, he visited the village of Bombo where he spent the day interacting with the children and adults, even helping them repair a hut which had collapsed in the recent rain, all the while observing and taking photographs.

Detritus:

Rahul is currently involved in a project to explore the process of nature reclaiming what it gave up when the colonial-style bungalows of the Belgaum Cantonment were built to house the officers of the British Army. Some of these bungalows are about a hundred years old and have not been regularly occupied or maintained. This has brought them to a state of dilapidation, reducing them to only vestiges of a once glorious past. These photographs are the first installment of the Detritus project.rd1

A question to muse on while viewing this series is “Will glass, concrete and steel structures be as graceful in their twilight years?” The photographer hopes these photographs will plant the seeds of recyclable architecture.

An interview with the budding eye behind the lens:

1.What sparked your interest in photography?

Rahul ---> Dad’s old camera was lying unused for a number of years. I put a roll of film and shot it, nothing came out cause I had not loaded it properly. Therefore, I looked up the right way (thank you, Internet) to load film into that particular camera model and saw a bunch of links to photography resources. Read up and got addicted to the craft!

2.Have you taken any professional training?

Rahul ---> None whatsoever, but I have taken numerous workshops with very senior and experienced photographers in New York.

3.You are a MS in Information science then what made you turn to photography?

Rahul ---> As the addiction got deeper; I began to think about doing photography full time.

4.Which was your first ever photo or photo shoot on a commercial basis?

Rahul ---> Catalog for Quest LLC, an alcohol and spirits bottle printing and decorating firm based in New Jersey.

5.How many exhibitions have you done of your photos?(details)

Rahul ---> This will be my first exhibition in India. I have done two exhibitions so far, both in Greensboro in the US.

6.What do you like photograph models, original facets etc?

Rahul ---> Live models in a concept style set is my favorite thing to shoot. I specialize in music promotional photography, which means shooting pictures for musicians and bands that can be used for advertising and promotion.

I also like to shoot street life, which was my first passion when I began shooting.

7.Narrate one good and one bad experience during your photography career? Rahul ---> The best experience so far has been shooting Agnee, India's premier Indi-rock band, they are superb musicians as well as extremely warm and friendly people. We were laughing and joking throughout the shoot.

The worst experience was when the boyfriend of a model I was shooting showed up and started offering advice to me and generally distracting me. I had to pack up and cancel the shoot altogether.

8.Your favourite place for a photo shoot?

Rahul ---> Anywhere I can bring a camera and a subject together!

9.What do you prefer out door or indoors?

Rahul ---> Outdoor, definitely.

10.You love music and also perform in band and teach in school, how do u manage all these things at a time? Rahul ---> All the above are what I am passionate about, so it does not seem like too much effort.

11.Do you like B&W photography or color is best?
Rahul ---> Depends on the concept and subject, I like both but I am a tiny bit partial to B&W.

12.What sort of equipment and software do you use?

Rahul ---> I use digital SLRs and also a nice digital point and shoot. I use Adobe Creative Suite software for processing.

13.What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures?

Rahul ---> There’s a saying in Marathi, "Thodkyaat godi". I live by that principle. I prefer to get the effect and feel I am looking for while shooting, so I can reduce the amount of time required to post-process. That way I can spend more time behind a camera and less time in front of a computer.

14.Any idols that you admire?

Rahul ---> I admire Steve McCurry, David LaChappelle, Annie Leibovitz, Mike Peters among many others. Some of my friends are also awesome photographers; Nitin Joshi is one of them.

15.You settled in Pune, why did not you think Belgaum as a option?

Rahul ---> Ultimately I want to be a full-time advertising photographer and Mumbai is the center of that activity. Pune is within a 2-hour drive and removed from the crazy life and weather in Mumbai.

16.One dream location you want to shoot and whom?

Rahul ---> I dream of shooting Dream Theater in Ladakh, Porcupine Tree in Patagonia and Symphony X in Pompeii.

17.What do you love the most about your job?

Rahul ---> I can go to work in shorts and slippers! Going on a shoot is like a picnic and I can stay at home the rest of the time, working on the pictures.

18.What would you say to other enthusiast photographers out there who aspire to what you have achieved?

Rahul ---> See the final photograph in your mind's eye before you shoot it.

19.Do u think Belgaum has good quality labs for printing of commercial photos. Your thoughts?

Rahul ---> I have not yet found a better printing lab than Subhash Photos. They work with minimum fuss and quality is top-notch.

20.Your favourite place in Belgaum?

Rahul ---> Ramdev Galli, my home; I enjoy wandering around Camp and Nanawadi as well.

21.In your view is this website doing good for Belgaumites?

Rahul ---> AllaboutBelgaum is the only site I go to when I want to get news about my hometown.

Playground for sports or exhibitions

1:27 PM Posted by ukmad

In this modern world where children prefer to play on the PS3 and Mafia Wars, the play grounds reserved for only sports activities are often seen having some sort of exhibitions all the year round which makes the children from playing sports on the said ground.sardar-1sardarsardar-2

Take for example the Sardars ground where in there is one or the other exhibition held there, as it is centrally located. Read the notice in front of the ground entrance “this ground is reserved for sports activities only” all other activities take place other sports here I believe.

Exhibitions run here for months together and the children cant play on the ground. Parents shout at children do not watch TV go out and play, and the children cant play as the ground is occupied by an exhibition.

The exhibitors must have taken due permission from the Principal as stated in the notice but for how many days will the ground be blocked and the children deprived of their right to play. We need to think on this, or lese our next generation would only know PS3, Mafia wars, Need for Speed.

BPOs might finally start eyeing Belgaum

4:35 PM Posted by ukmad

Tier 4 would be towns like Nanded, Davangere, and Belgaum; – again substantial locally educated population who migrate to larger urban centers for jobs. The resource pool is not as large as Tier 3 but can be effectively harnessed to the "100-seater" concept, which refers to the size of low-cost yet economically sound rural BPO. —Deepak J. Patel is chief executive officer of Aditya Birla Minacs, a business solutions company. This is part of the article written by Deepak Patel for The Wall Street Journal.

Mr.Satish Kumar, a Belgaumite who is in Dubai and member of ITBelagumgroup has already mailed Aditya Birla Minacs on 18th August 2009.

And in reply to the letter Deepak J. Patel stated,

Thanks for your note. We will certainly evaluate. We do have a focused plan to look at such towns for our India Domestic business needs. Our team will take this evaluation forward to align with our business needs.

Best regards,

Deepak J. Patel

deepak

“If India lived in her villages at independence, 62 years on - a vast young population lives in these sorts of towns.

Economic development grows once infrastructure growth picks up speed. And going forward that's precisely where the IT and BPO industry can play the role of a fulcrum, with our increasingly younger population as the lever. We need to embrace the growth taking place in the so-called Tier 3 and 4 towns.

The article mentions India’s journey and development and what opportunities lay ahead. He emphasizes on Strategy to attract investment and infrastructure, broader availability of skills& growing demand for telecom, retail, automotive and financial services. All governments are giving subsidy for growth in tier 3 and 4 cities. Karnataka has announced government grants for rural BPOs in the form of capital investment subsidy up to 2 million rupees per 100 seater, financial support of 10,000 rupees and 5,000 rupees per employee respectively for manpower training, and as subsidy for rentals and internet connectivity.

All the points mentioned in the article fit perfectly for Belgaum; from broader availability of skills to growing demand for telecom, retail, automotive and financial services.

Deepak J. Patel is chief executive officer of Aditya Birla Minacs is looking at Belgaum or at least the city is getting a mention on the list is worth many a thing. Now it’s up to the local representatives and government to get the IT-BPO companies to Belgaum.

At last it may be time for some big IT-BPO companies to set up shop here.

Belagavi Panthers or Belgaum Panthers

10:56 AM Posted by ukmad

Belgaum is famous for Kunda and the border row and the dispute keeps peeping itself in on various occasions, thanks to some pro language people and organizations.

This time the row is over the naming of the KPL franchisee as Belagavi Panthers. Advocate Madhav Chavan, in a letter has written to former BCCI president and Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar urging action against Karnataka State Cricket Association for naming the cricket team "Belagavi Panthers". He also stated that the central government had not given its nod for renaming of Belgaum and when the official name is still Belgaum why the team name has been kept as Belagavi.

Mr.Chavan also mentioned that that neither government nor the association had the right to use the name "Belagavi", as long as the matter was still in court.

May what happen but the language bias does come up in some form or the other in Belgaum. The idea of Mr.Chavan of writing to Shard Pawar may not do any good.

Now let us think of a hypothetical situation where in the team name is changed to Belgaum Panthers, then what happens, the Pro Kannada organizations will come up strongly against the changing of the name.

A notable factor here is the names of other teams of the KPL. Bangalore Brigadiers why wasn’t it named as ‘Bengaluru’ Brigadiers or Mysore Maharaajas as ‘Mysuru’ Maharaajas.

Only the Belgaum team is Belagavi Why is this? Any idea readers.

Pandit R K Bijapure Maha Meru of Samvadini Harmonium

Written by Shridhar Kulkarni & Ravindra Katoti-

Pt. R. K. Bijapure, an octogenarian, who is also popularly known as Shri. Rambhau

Pandit R K Bijapure

Bijapure, hardly needs any introduction in the music circle. Over the past six decades he has been an extensively famous persona among the music lovers all over India. As an outstanding solo performer, as an accomplished accompanist, as a versatile teacher, as a good music director, as a great institution builder and above all as a humanitarian Pt. Bijapure is a towering multi-dimensional celebrity. At 93 he still is charming as ever.

Education & career:

Born in 1917 at Kagwad (Belgaum district, Karnataka state) Pt. Bijapure developed inclination towards music due to his father late Shri. Kallopant Bijapure, a dramatist and a composer. His compositions were played on harmonium / organ and presented on the stage by another famous harmonium player late Shri. Annigeri Mallayya. As a child Shri.Rambhau was fascinated by the melodies of harmonium and showed a lot of interest in learning the art of harmonium playing. Shri.Annigeri Mallayya took the young Rambhau under his wings and taught him the basics of harmonium playing. Keen to learn further, Pt. Bijapure took advanced training in harmonium from Pt. Rajwade, Shri.Govindrao Gaikwad and Pt. Hanmantrao Walwekar of Dharwad. But for some voice problem Pt. Bijapure would have become a great vocalist as his wish was to become the one. However, this did not deter him from taking lessons in vocal music from stalwarts like Pt. Ramkrishnabua Vaze, Pt. Shivrambua Vaze, Pt. Kagalkarbua, and Pt. Utturkarbua. In fact, systematic training in vocal music helped him in developing his own style of ‘gayaki ang’ in playing harmonium solo.bijapurre1

Pt. Bijapure is a Sangeet Visharad (Vocal) and Sangeet Alankar (Harmonium) both, conferred upon him by Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. He has also to his credit a shikshak sanad. In his long music career he has worked as a music teacher in Belgaum, as music director and Harmonium accompanist in Shri.Venkobrao Shirahatti’s drama company, as a harmonium accompanist in HMV, as an examiner for Akhila Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya- Mumbai, and the examinations conducted by the Government of Karnataka.

Performances:

After deciding to take-up harmonium as sadhana of his life, Pt.Bijapure never looked back.

With firm determination, continuous riyaz and profound thinking about the technique and presentation of harmonium playing (solo as well as accompaniment) Pt. Bijapure developed his own inimitable style. His solo performance is marked by clear, smooth and unbroken flow of

swaras in all the octaves and at different layaas, control over the air-flow (bhaata) and its apt use to express the bhavas in the exposure of a raga. Pt. Bijapure’s solo performances are real treat for the rasikas as they include all the major forms of classical music namely - Vilambit khyals, drut bandishes, light classical compositions, natya-geets and the like. – All played with equal ease, and eloquence. He has rendered his solo performances in all major music centers of the country including Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolhapur, Hubli, Dharwad and on AIR. During the Festival of Russia in India, a Russian delegation was mesmerized after listening to Panditji’s solo. They specially recorded on the video his swift finger movements on harmonium keyboard.bijapure

As an accompanist he is undisputedly second to none. He has developed a unique style of accompaniment by showing his identity while complementing the main artistes and using the pauses available in between to add charm to the concert. Building a continuous rapport with the audience is another feature of his presentation. In his music career so far, he has accompanied almost all the leading vocalists of major Gharanas of Hindustani classical music. Illustratively,

Pt.Ramkrishnabua Vaze, Pt.Shivrambua Vaze, Pt.Kagalkarbua, Pt.Sawai Gandharva,

Pt.D.V.Paluskar, Pt.Utturkarbua, Ustad Amir Khan, Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan, Dr.Gangubai

Hangal, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Basavraj Rajguru, Pt. Mallikarjun Mansoor, Pt. Kumar Gandharva, Smt. Manik Verma, Smt. Kishori Amonkar, Smt. Malini Rajurkar, Dr. Prabha Atre etc.

Building an Institution:

Pt. Bijapure has painstakingly collected a large repertoire of Hindustani music including a wide range of cheezes, bandishes and compositions from his Gurus. He is too generous to distribute this invaluable wealth among the desired and deserved ones. Towards this end he started “Shri Ram Sangeet Mahavidyalaya” in 1938. Over the last six decades he developed the institute single handedly without any aid from the Government or private bodies. More than 10,000 students have gained under his tutelage. ‘Sir’, as Panditji is lovingly called by his students, is very compassionate towards poor, handicapped and helpless students. He teaches such students free of cost.

Today many of his students have established their names in the field of music. Dr.Sudhanshu Kulkarni - Sangeet Praveen (equivalent of doctorate in music conferred by Gandharva Sangeet Mahavidyalaya), Shri. Ravindra Mane - Sangeet Alankar, Shri. Ravindra Katoti – Sangeet Alankar, Smt. Kunda Welling – Vocalist AIR Mumbai, Shri. Shridhar Kulkarni - Surmani, Smt.

Manik Panditrao, Smt Archana Belgundi, Smt. Rohini Kulkarni, Smt. Asha Joshi, Smt. Aparna

Chitnis are among the several students of Pt. Bijapure who are committed to carry forward the legacy of their revered Guru to the next generations.

Awards & Recognition:

Recognizing Pt. Bijapure’s achievements, innumerable felicitations, several awards and titles have come his way. Major among them are: “Karnataka Kala Tilak” Puraskar conferred bySangeet Nritya Academy in the year 1985, “Nadashree” Puraskar given by Hindustani Sangeet Kalakar Mandali, Bangalore in the year 1992, “Sangatkar Puraskar” conferred by Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Pune in the year 1999, “Rajya Sangeet Vidvan” at the Dasara festival held in Mysore in the year 2001. On 25th July 2003, he was awarded the prestigious “T.Chowdaiah

Prashasti” instituted in memory of Violin Maestro Shri.T.Chowdaiah, by the Government of Karnataka at the hands of honourable Chief Minister. Akhil Bharateeya Gandharva Mahavidyalay Mandal conferred upon him the title “Mahamahopadhyay” in the year 2006. Lahari Recording Company, Bangalore has published two of his CDs, featuring his classical solo performances. Leading Kannada writer Shri.Shirish Joshi recently published his autobiography in Kannada titled ‘Swarayana’.

Even at the age of 91, this Maha Meru of Samvadini is very busy with his performances, music classes, entertaining unending stream of visitors and artistes at his residence “Ram Niwas”.

Address:

Pt. R. K. Bijapure,

“Ram Niwas”, Hulbatte Colony, Shahapur, Belgaum (Karnataka).
