No power but still be ready to pay more
10:46 AM Posted by ukmad
Acute power crisis has hit Belgaum and the state and where city needs 120 MW its hardly getting 44MW.
Minister Eswarappa said that Belgaum will get 20MW more from Wednesday from the central grid. However, is there any surplus in the central grid to provide is yet to be seen?
CM BSY yesterday again cautioned the public at large that the hike in electricity tariff was round the corner and he cannot do anything to stop it. A rise of about 20% to 30% is expected from the next month in the electricity tariff.
The time table declared is for 7 hours where as there are power cuts for up to 10 hours in city and more than 14 hours in rural areas.
Its hardships all the way, kerosene, which was available in the open market for Rs.32 per liter, now costs anything from Rs.35 to 37. This is hitting the businesspersons a lot.
So this is “Government’s work is God’s work”. Those words written on the Vidhan Soudha, Bangalore I had read long time back
Not knowing this may leave a big hole in your pocket Traffic violations
1:40 PM Posted by ukmad
If you are getting caught quite often by Bangalore's traffic police, then this will be the article you cannot miss out on. From now onwards, the Traffic Police cannot catch a motorist just to examine the driving license or vehicle documents. He can catch you only if you have violated any traffic laws or if you are driving drunk.
Remember that when caught for traffic violation, the fine you pay must be limited to the violation. In other words, the police can't bloat the bill saying that you have no insurance cover or emission certificate, etc.
Many motorists do not know this. According to the State's Road Transportation Act, no policeman can slap a penalty on you just because you have no insurance or emission certificate. If you have not purchased insurance cover for your vehicle, then the police officer must issue a notice, not impose penalty. You must be given 15 days' time to purchase insurance cover and one week for obtaining the emission certificate. Days later, meet the sub-inspector at his station with the insurance cover or emission certificate, so that he will annul the charge at once. Police can fine you only if you fail to produce these documents within the stipulated period.
If your vehicle is brand new, then you need not bother about obtaining the emission certificate for one full year.
In response to a question as to why policemen fine people instantly without giving them time to obtain insurance cover or emission certificate, Additional Commissioner for Traffic Praveen Sood said, "Yes, it is a mistake. People must force policemen to issue notice or complain to me at least the following day.
The best way to teach the police a lesson is filing a written complaint with their higher officials and, a week later, using the Right to Information Act (RTI) to know the action taken against them.
Remember, any question or application filed under RTI cannot be ignored and no official is bold enough to ignore the RTI Act.

Power cuts reels country from Delhi to Galli
11:15 AM Posted by ukmad
Power cuts and protests against it were seen in most parts of north India, where as in the south 6 to 8 hours of power cuts were seen without much resent from the public as yet.
Particularly in Belgaum the weather is cold enough for the fans and AC’s to be shut down which is saving power but the small business man like a photocopying, internet cafes had to shut down as there is no power. IT companies working in Belgaum also face the same problem and Swapneel of eth1 network solutions said that he had a 12 hour back up for his office which needs to run 24 *7, 365 days and he had to buy a generator to get power back up. He added we cannot do without power, if inverters fail then we have to have backup systems for this as well.

KHB selling flats at 1750 per sq ft
1:03 PM Posted by ukmad
Karnataka Housing board (KHB) is constructing huge towers near the railway over bridge and the construction is going on full swing. It was in trouble when an RTI unearthed that the building was illegal and did not have the requisite permissions from the corporation. What has happened after that is still unknown.
Now 190 flats of 1, 2 & 3 bedrooms are being put for sale by KHB. Forms are available at the Axis bank Congress road branch.
The price fixed is Rs.1750 per sq. feet. So for a 1 bedroom flat you need about 15 lakhs.
The said building is being constructed to provide housing at affordable rates but by no means these are affordable and also that the KHB said that the building was for accommodating government staff.
1750 seems to be very high price as nearby residential areas cost anywhere between 1000 to 1500 sq. feet and this building is in very close proximity to the railway track, this could be a cause of concern.
The KHB website still does not have any information about this and advertisement for the sale of flats has appeared in news papers but I haven’t got my hand on it yet.

Posting Classifieds made easy by Belgaum guys uproot labs
1:03 PM Posted by ukmad
The most awaited stable release of the Indian Classifieds site is finally up.
Visit: http://uproot.in. The site offers users to post their advertisements absolutely FREE of cost. The site caters to almost all cities in India and there are numerous categories one can post an Ad into. The best part it’s made by two guys from Belgaum.
Please point your browsers to http://uproot.in
AllAboutBelgaum.com partners with Uproot and all ads posted for Belgaum can be seen in one page, http://allaboutbelgaum.com/classifieds/ |
What is UpRoot.in ?
A simple website to post classifieds online for free, it has been exclusively created for Indian users, and covers all districts in the country (600+).
Everything about the site is geared towards simplicity, including:
· the look — very few graphics + dynamic interface
· The operational model — zero intervention between seller and buyer is our policy.
What is it not?
While making the site, one path we did not tread (nor intend to tread) is social networking. They will add more features in the future to facilitate collaboration between groups of users. But they don’t expect it to become a core feature of the site. The reason is — keeping things simple for everyone, in particular the average or internet newbie’s.
Uproot.in is the first baby from the Uproot Labs, Belgaum. Uproot labs are a gargantuan team of two Harshad Joglekar & Dr Ameet Patil who know each other from college days. After a “long time, no see” span of 10 years, they met over Orkut, and found that they both had an urge to start a company from our hometown, Belgaum. Dr.Ameet Patil also runs his own startup Spundhan which has already been featured on this blog.
Uproot has been designed by both as they have major experience in system software, particularly embedded system software. They are trying something new; web services. They shoulder equal responsibilities. They both design, code, make decisions with equal flair.
They chose Belgaum as it has its own set of advantages & disadvantages. But the advantages are now out marking the latter with the advent of internet.
They chose to develop their own web framework; a tailor made suit that fits needs, and is optimized for performance.
They also plan to have key partnerships with other sites for the content and AllAboutBelgaum was the first one to approach them in this regard and a feed only for Belgaum is here.
So all the ads you post under Belgaum will be coming up there automatically. (Collective growth of It & ITeS services in Belgaum)
In the longer term they aim to monetize from premium Ads on the website. The core functionality will always remain free.
Here are some of the features of UpRoot.in
Categories
While posting an Ad the user is required to select the most relevant category. This in turn helps people to quickly and easily find what they need. Care has been taken to include the most common categories the users will encounter in their daily life.
Ads that offer and Ads that want
Broadly speaking, every Ad has either something to offer to the viewer, or wants something from the viewer. It is specified during the creation of an Ad, and helps viewers to quickly find items that offer or want something from them.
Specifying the location
Viewers can choose to filter their Ads depending on the physical location. One can choose a specific city, a state or all locations in India.
Privacy
They are very concerned about your privacy and take it very seriously.
There is an in-built mechanism to contact users, without needing to divulge either the seller’s or buyer’s contact information until each party voluntarily chooses to do so.
Membership
Users/Visitors to the site can view/search all advertisements without requiring to login. However, to protect your privacy, you required you register as a member in order to post a new or respond to an Ad.
Membership on Uproot.in is absolutely FREE, and requires just a confirmation of your email address. You can choose your own profile-name aka avatar.
If readers are interested in working on exciting embedded and web technologies, they can send their profile description / resume to jobs@uproot.co.in
This is another paradigm of what two minds from a same city can do together professionally. Here it is not friendship but professional caliber and an urge to do something of your own. Both Harshad & Dr.Ameet have worked in different companies who paid them handsomely, but they always wanted to be their own BOSS.
All the best to the Duo.
Corporators party in BCC office
10:49 AM Posted by ukmad
The office of the Belgaum City Corporation (BCC) was a make shift bar cum restaurant on Sunday. All the elected and nominated corporators, including the Mayor were present and took pleasure in the party organized at the BCC premises.
A corporator, who attended the party, said that they had availed permission from the Mayor and BCC Commissioner for holding the party. He also said that no liquor was served in the party. However the scene was different. A class-IV employee, who attended the party, confirmed that liquor had been served to the invitees.
BCC Commissioner S G Patil, he said that the corporators had taken his permission for conducting an official meeting along with lunch at the office premises.
“The meeting was expected to continue till late evening,” he said. But Patil denied giving permission to any party to be organised at the BCC office premises.
What can we say to these corporators who we got elected? Nothing can happen as it was a official meeting with lunch. Town has seen many cases of Chiken Gunia and Dengue and the corporation is denying that there is any breakout of both diseases. But the truth is otherwise. Many have been affected by these and the corporation is still waiting for a couple of persons to die and then their eye may open.
There have been only 2 heavy rains so far, and water logging was seen in all parts of the city and also places like Chennamma circle there was water logging, so imagine the work done by BCC. All elected members should have a responsibility and if they don’t adhere to it there should be some mechanism to call them back.
God save Belgaum.

Corrigendum NH4 A to be 4 laned by IRB only in Goa state
4:42 PM Posted by ukmad
Belgaum Goa road to be 4 laned contract to IRB infra
In this post I had mentioned “The 81 kms stretch from Karnataka Goa border to Belgaum road NH 4A will be widened by IRB INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPERS LIMITED.”
This is correct and the 81 kms stretch is in Goa itself. That is from Panaji to Karnataka Border. For Belgaum to Goa border road the tender has been called for and u can get details on NHAI site here it is: “Design, Engineering,Finance,Construction, Operation And Maintenance Of Belgaum- Knt/Goa Border Section Of NH-4a From Km 0.000 To Km 84.000 In The State Of Karnataka Under NHDP Phase III On Design, Build,Finance,Operate And Transfer (DBFOT) ) Toll Basis. . RFQ, Invitation, Replies to Queries”
The photos in the old post were of the Belgaum to Goa stretch which is full of greenery. The said tender has not been granted yet as it is in litigation. Nature lovers have taken some objection over cutting the trees on the stretch.
AllAboutBelgaum is very apologetic for the error.
