Kingfisher air timings from Belgaum to Bangalore: Revised: understandable

5:34 PM Posted by ukmad

I had posted a time table for the Belgaum to Bangalore flight timings and back. Now that seems to be not there if you see the Schedule.

If, you believe the schedule then there are no flights on 2 days, we have flights on 1,3,5,7. So 2 days there are no flights but if you go to book online all the days you can see the flights and the timings also differ from the schedules.

I really cannot understand a single thing from this website, I just hope the flights comes in and goes back hahaha…
I am totally confused with this and give a disclaimer that I cannot tell you exactly when the flights are.

Belgaum second capital unlikely

4:09 PM Posted by ukmad

The BJP government in the State seems to be in no mood to accord the ‘second capital’ tag to the border town of Belgaum, which has been a long-cherished dream of the people of the district.

Now, Belgaumites have to be satisfied with just being host to the winter sessions of the Legislature. The government has dropped the idea citing technical reasons.

Should Belgaum be declared the second capital? Several divergent views have been expressed on the issue.

I will pressurize the government to declare Belgaum as the second capital. According second capital status to Belgaum will help development of north Karnataka. All these days development has happened only in and around Bangalore. So it is very essential.
Prabhakar KoreBJP MLC

Belgaum has grown tremendously in recent years. It is getting what it wanted. Mini Vidhana Soudha has become a reality with the land being acquired for it. Every year winter session will be held here.A circuit bench of the High Court has been set up at Dharwad, just about 75 kms away from Belgaum. The city has a host of good educational and medical institutions. Next to Bangalore, Belgaum boasts of providing quality education. The city has an airport which will be expanded soon. Sugar industry is vibrant. A superfast train can be introduced from Belgaum to Hubli. For me, Belgaum is a 'happening city' and I am happy with it. This is exactly what we wanted. A city need not be declared as a capital but it should grow the way a capital should develop. Bangalore is choking with both human and vehicle population. Development has to shift to other cities. Declaring Belgaum as second capital will pave way for similar demand by people of Gulbarga.
In the years to come, the states are bound to be reorganized. The Kolhapur division comprising Sangli, Ratnagiri, Karad, the Belgaum division comprising old Bijapur, Bagalkot, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Karwar, parts of Mangalore and Goa would form a new state with Belgaum as the capital. The population in all cities is growing. The Kolhapur division is far away from Mumbai. Goa is facing elections frequently. Belgaum is growing in a systematic way and it has a mix of people speaking various languages. I am sure that Belgaum will be the ideal choice for a state's capital.
Umesh KattiBJP MLA & Minister
About six years ago during the Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, I had raised the demand to accord second capital status to Belgaum. In fact, the Sammelan had passed a resolution to this effect. Even today I hold the same view. Some years ago we were forced to assert that Belgaum belongs to Karnataka as the boundary dispute aggravated.Because of our consistent demand, the government is holding the legislature session for the second time in Belgaum. Officials are now not in a position to ignore Belgaum just because it is far away from the capital. The city, though not an official second capital, has acquired somewhat identical status with hosting Assembly session. Activities will shift from Bangalore to Belgaum once the mini Vidhana Soudha is constructed. There is a need to decentralise power. Bangalore is congested and Belgaum is the best alternative though Mangalore is the 'commercial capital'. In the coming session, I am going to press for declaring Belgaum as the second capital.
Dr M P Nadagouda,MLC

It is not possible to officially declare second capital. The Constitution does not allow States to have second capital.

Media coverage of Belgaum: assembly session

10:59 AM Posted by ukmad

Media coverage of Belgaum: assembly session
In continuance of my all India media coverage of Belgaum during the Assembly session, here are some interesting points.
The national media is not covering the assembly as it yet to start, its giving great importance to the other issues like MES maha Mellava. Yesterday I had posted news bites from PTI; see a part from Bangalore Mirror.

The Karnataka-Maharashtra boundary row could whip up passions yet again. The day: Friday. The place: Belgaum. For, the state government will hold its winter session of legislature in the border district.
The same day, the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) plans to hold the Marathi Mahamellav. The MES (splinter group) is staging the rally in protest against Karnataka holding its winter session in Belgaum.
Sonia Narang, SP, said, “We have not granted permission to the MES. In 2006, permission had been granted and things had gone worse. This time, we don’t want to take risks. It is left to the government to allow them to hold the rally or not. We have taken all security measures.”
A meeting of the Marathas will be held at Lele Grounds, Tilakwadi on Jan 16 in Belgaum.
The MES has split due to the denial of tickets in the recent Assembly polls. One of the MES factions is led by Kiran Thakur, editor of Marathi newspaper ‘Tarun Bharat’. Its members are: Vijay More and Shivaji Sunthkar, former Belgaum mayors; B I Patil, former MLA; and Kiran Saynak, T K Patil and Narayan Kitwadkar, all corporators. The other faction is led by former Maharashtra minister Prof N D Patil. He has the backing of Manohar Kinyekar, Narayanrao Tarale, Digambar Patil and Vasantrao Patil, all former MLAs; Maloji Ashtekar, former Belgaum mayor; and Deepak Dalvi, a senior MES leader.

Belgaum is getting hotter, politically

10:21 AM Posted by ukmad

The Karnataka Govt. citing the danger of a law and order situation has arrested Ex MLA and MES leader Manohar Kinekar, last night. Other couple of other MES leaders was also arrested with him.
The state govt, has denied the MES permission for the parallel Maha Mellava and hence these arrests. A few more could be arrested today.
There is huge police establishment in Belgaum since yesterday and Belgaum is turning into a fortress. About 4000 police personal have been called in for duty to Belgaum from various other places. Rapid Action force has also been called in.
The situation could get hotter through the day.
Even after the arrests the MES claims it will hold the maha Mellava, may what come.

Karnataka gives politicians chance to revive border row:Belgaum Media Coverage

7:20 PM Posted by ukmad

This bit of news seems to be a continuing coverage of PTI of the issue.
I am posting this on this blog as the same will be covered by the national media, and the manner in which it is covered is important to us. But I personally liked the heading of the post (Karnataka gives politicians chance to revive border row).

Karnataka's decision to hold an assembly session in Belgaum from January 16, has given politicians a fresh opportunity to rake up the long standing border dispute with Maharashtra which is now pending with the Supreme Court. The Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) and some Maharashtra politicians such as Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chagan Bhujbal have for long been agitating to realise their demand for merger of 856 villages and towns of Karnataka, including Belgaum, Karwar and Nippani with Maharashtra. However, MES failed to win a single seat in the Marathi-dominated areas in last year's assembly elections and the emotive appeal of the issue seems to have lost traction with the younger generation of Marathi-speaking people in Karnataka.Bhujbal, one of the leading lights of the agitation in the '80s, however, told PTI it was wrong to say the movement has lost its relevance just because the MES is not in control of the Belgaum municipality and was without representation in the Karnataka Assembly. While MES believes the Karnataka move is aimed at thwarting their "just" struggle, Karnataka, sees the session as an opportunity to remove the feeling of alienation among the Marathi-speaking people of Belgaum and at the same time assert its right over the city. This will be the second time when a Karnataka assembly session will be held in Belgaum. Former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy had decided to hold the first one at the end of 2007 while announcing that Belgaum would be developed as the second capital of Karnataka and Rs 100 crore would be spent for its development. The delay in arriving at an amicable solution to the boundary row was due to political and electoral interests of national parties in both the states, Bhujbal said."Delay is inevitable, but justice is important. The matter is now pending before the Supreme Court and the State Government is pressing for an early solution," he added.Maharashtra has a rightful claim over Belgaum and other areas on the basis of language and geographical continuity, said Bhujbal.Even as the dispute awaits the Supreme Court verdict, pro-merger Marathi politicians are hopeful that justice will be done and the court's judgment will go in their favour.

52 yrs on, Maha-Karnataka boundary row still stirs emotions

4:24 PM Posted by ukmad

This is a PTI news bite pasted as on their site;
(PTI) Despite the over fifty-year old boundary dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka becoming a matter of less concern for the new generation, the issue continues to stir emotions among the votaries of merger of Marathi-speaking areas with the southern state.
As Karnataka prepares to hold Assembly session in Belgaum, a border district, the pro-merger groups revisit their long struggle and are hopeful of "justice".
Leaders of pro-unification Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) and politicians from Maharashtra, who participated in various agitations in Belgaum, said they were still awaiting the Supreme Court's verdict on the dispute, one of the last unresolved offshoots of the linguistic reorganisation.
"Justice delayed is justice denied. But we are still positive and hopeful that we will get justice," a top leader of MES, Kiran Thakur, told PTI.
MES has been observing November 1, the Rajyotsava Day (foundation day) of Karnataka as `Black Day' and January 17 as "martyrs day" every year to commemorate the martyrdom of five people from Belgaum who were killed in police firing protesting the decision to include the city in Karnataka.
The session starting in Belgaum from January 16 is the second since then Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy took the decision at the end of 2007. He had even announced that Belgaum would be developed as the second capital of Karnataka and Rs 100 crore would be spent for its development.
Karnataka sees the session as an opportunity to remove the feeling of alienation among the people of Belgaum and at the same time assert its right over the city. PTI

No permission to MES to hold Maha Melava

4:47 PM Posted by ukmad

No permission to MES to hold Maha Melava
No permission has been given to MES to hold the session. The MES had planned to invite Maharashtra deputy CM Chagan Bhujbal and Raj Thackrey on January 16 for the Maha Melava as a parallel session to the legislative session to begin on the same day.
"MES is playing with the sentiments of Kannadigas and Marathis. But we will not get in their way. We'll intervene if they create law and order problems," Yeddyurappa said.
The material brought by the MES for the said Melva was confiscated by the police.

Farmers ready to give land for Suvarna Vidhan Soudha
Halga-Bastwad, the place where the Suvarna Vidhan Soudha will be built on 112 acres, the farmers have at last given their nod for acquiring their land but at a price not less than Rs. 13.5 lakh an acre.
Government has proposed to acquire more than 100 acres of land in Survey Number 63 of Halga-Bastwad villages on Pune-Bangalore National Highway No 4 about 12 km from the city to build the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.
The land with black cotton soil is under agriculture/horticulture.
The Government had agreed to pay a compensation of Rs. 12 lakh an acre, the farmers sought at least Rs. 15 lakh an acre as they would not get alternative land at the same price. Also, many growers would lose their only source of income. The Government would distribute compensation amount within two weeks of acquiring their land.

Joy Bank starts its joy ride

4:20 PM Posted by ukmad

To make someone else happy is the best one can do.
I had posted about Joy Bank on this blog, and many of my readers have joined the joy bank. When I posted the story there were about 28 members and now the number just touched 40.
Gouree Deshapnde’s Joy bank has just accomplished their first task for spreading happiness.
The Joy bank members went to the Shantai Vrdushram in the evening at 5pm, they had planned it in the morning but as all the Grandpas and Grandmas were taken to KLE for a health check up, they went to see them in the evening.
There was enormous joy on those old faces when they saw the members come. The manager Mr.Nagesh Cougule welcomed the members and familiarized them with the whole ashram.
The actual program was commenced with a prayer to the Almighty and a small introduction of the Joy bank was given to the inmates with the names who all donated for the event. Food was given to the cooking staff and the members then handed over the shirts and saris to the inmates.
It was 7.30pm and the members of the joy bank decided to take leave of the ashram.
As Gouree told this blog, “Our heart was full of delight when we saw the happiness in their eyes, Let us all pray God to make our hands so strong that we can reach all the needy who need us always...”
May God Bless you all.

These traffic lights have not been officially opened even after being installed for over a year now and hence they themselves have started to work but not the correct way I guess.
The complete city is getting a overhaul, the traffic lights in bogarves which have been shut for years together are being repaired, but who will look at these traffic lights which are functioning on their own.
In the first photo to locate the signal is only very difficult in those branches of the trees. In the first photo to locate the signal is only very difficult in those branches of the trees.

Life coming back to normal: Truckers strike still taking toll

10:03 AM Posted by ukmad

After the withdrawal of the strike of oil company officers the scene at the petrol bunks is now normal. I saw the Indian oil petrol bunks operational in the morning with normal queue of 3-4 persons. The situation yesterday was very bad due to panic buying.
One strike is over but the other one is still on, the truckers strike. The effect of this strike is now being seen. Vegetable prices have soared by 30%. The prices of fruits like banana and apple have risen by 30 to 40%. If the stir continues the impact of this stir will be much more than it is now.

The effects of the strike by 50000 employees of the various oil companies are now visible all over the country Belgaum is no surprise either.

The stock of petrol has not come out from the oil depots and hence form today afternoon, a few since the morning had closed down the petrol pumps, and by night, the scene was very bad. Long queues were seen outside the pumps but no petrol was there.

Things will be bad tomorrow as people who had fuels today and who said lets fill it tomorrow, hope you get fuel.

The govt. is not taking any steps in getting away with the strike. If the govt, does not act in time and the strike is not called of all will be in trouble. The trucker’s strike is already hitting the pockets again due to shortage.

Come on Govt. Do something for the common person, Murali Deoraji, now do not sleep come and take off this strike do something, work at least this time.

Diversions, Traffic woes and top it on Pilot VIP vehicles

8:32 PM Posted by ukmad

The roads are being re laid and hence the have been blocked from one side and hence the traffic is moving on a snails pace on Khanapur Road, From Cantonment Office towards Bogarves.

I was behind some 30 odd trucks and busses in a line, which were all moving at a very slow pace to the standard of Belgaum. Suddenly to add to all it a loud siren is heard and all look behind thinking it to be a ambulance and to give way to it, but when they see it’s a Pilot car of VIP all just look at him and no one moved.

The pilot car overtook me and went forward even when we all were stranded. The scene was nice when a truck from the front came in and the pilot car was stranded in the middle with nowhere to go. The siren was still on and was very annoying. The pilot car some how managed to make through the traffic and then zoomed out with the VIP.

We elect these politicians and they become VIPs and we the common man who elect them have to suffer.
This scene of traffic woes due to VIP vehicles will only increase in the days to come, especially from Chennama circle to KLE.

Road from Bogarves to Khanapur road (PWD limit near the old age home) has been completed. Now it is a smooth ride.

KRV threatens agitation

10:17 AM Posted by ukmad

Water Tariff hiked for 24x7 wards

Water Tariff hiked for 24x7 wards

The Belgaum City Corporation on Monday, unanimously adopted a resolution to implement new tariff for water connections under the 24x7 drinking water supply scheme in the city.

The new tariff will be effective in the 10 wards only having the 24x7 water supply.

This very blog had broken the story on 30 August 2008, http://belgaumblog.com/2008/08/water-prices-increase-by-a-whopping-42/

Opposition members, who strongly opposed the proposal, said that people were already overburdened with inflation and price rise. It was not fair on the part of the civic body to impose additional burden on them. See this link for a complete understanding of the tariff structure already posted on this blog.

This hike in prices will be a added calamity on the poor people. All those who fall under the said 10 wards will have to pay the hiked tariff.

Belgaum session will be historic

4:50 PM Posted by ukmad

The session in Belgaum will be a historic one providing constructive reformation to North Karnataka.
The agenda mostly would be surrounding the problems and projects of North Karnataka though issues concerning the entire State would also will be discussed.
Arrangements for holding the Session were on at a brisk pace.
Tight security will be provided during the session. The State Government had released Rs 10.48 crore for the session. This included repairing roads and other infrastructure.
As already covered by the blog, the infrastructure improvements are on a brisk pace. The standard may not be good but to suffice for the moment it’s a boon to the city.
All those Highmast lamps installed last year which were never looked after are now being repaired, another good sign. Tough the street lights in many areas don’t glow in the night.
The work on the international stadium near Kanbargi has caught pace (Source: shoutbox on site) which is indeed a good thing.
The opposition congress is against this session, if it was the BJP in opposition it would have done the same thing so opposition is opposition.
But all those coming into Belgaum from 10th January till 24 January be very particular about your hotel booking and train booking you might not get it easily, especially hotel bookings.

Belgaum getting a face lift: roads, pavements

5:05 PM Posted by ukmad

Thanks to the proposed Belgaum session of the legislature the roads of Belgaum are getting a makeup done. I am on purpose saying makeup, as its only make up on the old roads. But whatever it might be its good for all of us.
In the picture: The Sanchayni Circle road being re-laid. Congress Road is also being done and some other roads leading to JNMC have already been completed.
Himast Street lamps like those in many circles of Belgaum will be installed in more than 25 places now. Pit holes have been made at many places, I have seen them in Sanhcayni Circle & Gogte Circle, so we could now see them illuminated which was needed.
The part of college road from IDBI bank towards bogarves, the left most area of the road a new pavement of concrete has been laid.
To welcome this all the Ad Board on the Nucleus mall is back in running and is now showing both social service and private ads. The dividers at Bogarves circle are also being replaced by new ones. Still many things have been done throughout the city but its all main roads. The internal roads have been neglected and the whole machinery is now engaged is last minute makeup of roads etc.

10:02 AM Posted by ukmad

Joy Bank: this no new private sector bank, it’s a bank where in you can deposit any old clothes, books, toys or anything you wish to give. "JOY BANK ", a bank for a noble cause needs all your support and encouragement.
Everything you deposit in this bank will be going to the orphanages, vridhashram or blind school once in 2 months. A detailed reporting will be given to all the members. If you decide to donate money a detailed report along with the receipts will be given to you.
It doesn't cost you anything to give away your old things but means a lot to them... So do help!!!!!! This helping hand can be yours.
Joy Bank is brain child of Gouree Deshpande. Gouree, has been a topper in her academics with 1st rank to the College in M.C.A (GIT) and 3rd to the Karnatak University in BSc (GSS). She worked with Mindtree consulting and she left it only to believe her own mind and do something on her own.
Her husband has been very supportive in her efforts to build the Joy Bank. Her parents are also encouraging her in this endeavor.
At the moment about 28 are members of the Joy Bank, majority from Belgaum and others from Bangalore and other places.
The first ever donation event is to be made on 8th of January to Shantayee Vriddhashram. There are total of 8 grandma’s n 8 grandpas in the ashram. For this first event they needed 8 new saris and 8 new shirts. All the members to either donate a sari, a shirt or Rs.150.
Joy bank is going to make donations on a regular basis & members are requested not to make a large contribution only once, but instead to have active participation from all only a small amount as in this case Rs.150 or a sari were called in for.
You too can join them on 8th of January for the first donation by Joy bank. You may not have paid in this time, but your presence there would encourage other members and also the inmates of the ashram.
Do begin with, this is just a small start but with high aims.
My best wishes to the Joy Bank.

Belgaum session: Congress criticizes: Belgaumites Rejoice

6:29 PM Posted by ukmad

Leader of the Opposition in Karnataka Assembly Mallikarjuna Kharge today criticised the State government for having called the special Assembly session in Belgaum this month 'in a hurry'.
The duration of the session to be held in Belgaum was very short and should have been 20 days instead of three or four days. The government has convened the session only to fulfill the constitutional obligations which will not serve any purpose.
Governor Rameshwar Thakur will address the joint sitting of the State Legislature scheduled to begin from January 16 in Belgaum.
There will be no question hour during the Belgaum session. Both houses will sit on Jan 17 and take up obituary references. Official business will be taken up for six days from Jan 19 to 24. The houses will adjourn on Jan 24.
No question hour means the problems of the common man will not be raised, which is a must in democracy then why this Natak in Karnatak.
But, due to this session the roads are getting a new lease of life. Buildings are being painted, new High mast street lamps will be put up, about 25 in 10 days time, dividers being put and painted. Traffic signals being repaired and many other such things are been taken up right now in the city.
So this is nice for Belgaum.
